This week marks the launch of the National Food Production Initiative.   Bringing together eight partner organisations, the project has used Saudi-developed innovation and technologies to turn unproductive land into a modern, sustainable farming facility in Bada, Saudi Arabia.   The NFP Initiative uses a scalable model which could radically transform the lives of farmers, empowering them to regenerate desert agriculture in regions where the impact of climate change has made cultivation increasingly challenging, while increasing national food security.   We would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to our partners in the initiative: SABIC, Red Sea Global, Napco National, Tamala-تمالا, KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology)(KAUST), University of Tabuk and Terraxy.   Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dpVJ7NtE   #AgTech #agriclimatetech #sustainablefarming #NationalFoodProductionInitiative #SaudiArabia #iyris #SecondSky #foodsecurity

Current estimates suggest the world will need to produce 50% more food by 2050 to feed soaring population rates. Global agriculture accounts for over a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of the drain on freshwater resources - increasing to 85-90% in arid environments. Join iyris Executive Chair, John Keppler, at this year's Forbes Middle East Sustainability Leaders Summit, as he explores how breaking the food-water-energy nexus via innovative, sustainable technologies in agriculture to keep this population fed, is crucial. At iyris this is our north star and the reason we’re delivering groundbreaking drop-in AgriTech solutions, like SecondSky, that are scalable and available for deployment by farmers so we can make a real impact on food security. #sustainability #foodsecurity #sustainableleadership #AgTech #DeepTech

Is investment in AgriTech the answer to solving food security in the Middle East? It’s an important question, following forecasts the world population is going to increase to 10bn by 2050. To feed that many people, the world will need to produce 50% more food, principally by increasing efficiency and yields for farmers. Attention in recent years has been paid to high-tech solutions, yet a startling figure is that more than 95% of global fruit and vegetable production is from low-to-mid tech-enabled growers. Now, due to rising food demand in the face of changing climate, increased heat, water scarcity and drought, the situation is close to collapse. So, while vertical farming, drones, machine learning and AI might have a role in meeting the challenge of sustainable agriculture, it’s unlikely they will be the answer for the millions of farmers globally due to capital intensity and the complexity of deploying them. This is why viable solutions to the food security challenge will need to come through adapting and improving existing agricultural systems, meaning innovations must: 1.   Be easy for farmers to adopt 2.   Leverage the existing supply chain 3.   Deliver a tangible payback for farmers 4.   Mitigate increasing temperatures and water scarcity 5.   Improve access to yields from previously challenging lands, and  6.   Be sustainable long-term and improve labor conditions. As an organization with its roots in Saudi Arabia, we understand hot climates and the complexity of growing crops sustainably. So, at iyris we’ve given ourselves the challenge to make this ideal a reality. For example, our drop-in SecondSky greenhouse films which block near infrared heat radiation, extend the growing season and reduce water and energy consumption by over 30 percent. While the AgriTech sector cannot control the elements, we can support growers by developing the kind of technology that works, is easy to adopt and delivers value in real time. #agritech #agriculture #foodsecurity #iyris #secondsky

As record temperatures soar above 50°C, there is a critical need to address food security in the MENA region.   With agriculture accounting for over 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of freshwater use, it is clear the stakes are high. In the UAE, where 85% of fresh produce is imported, the pressure on farmers and resources is particularly immense.   Our Executive Chairman John Keppler recently discussed the important topic, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions – such as our own SecondSky – in alleviating the problem the region faces. Our heat radiation-blocking agricultural covers reduce energy usage by over 40% and water consumption by 30% - helping farmers thrive in harsh conditions and secure the region’s food future. We are proud of the role we play in helping to feed the world – sustainably.   Read John’s article in Sharikat Mubasher شركات مباشر Mubasher شركات مباشر, and find out more about how we’re enabling sustainable agriculture in an ever-warming world - https://lnkd.in/dpetmFub   #agtech #foodsecurity #sustainability #MENA #climatechange #SecondSky #agritech #agriculture
