Hypertension in men and women is the most prevalent cardiovascular disorder affecting 30–
50% of the adult population. Before the age of 50, hypertension is more prevalent in men
and there is a steeper increase in systolic blood pressure in women around menopause and
in subsequent years inducing a higher prevalence of hypertension in elderly females. The
rise in systolic blood pressure with aging is caused by increased large artery stiffness.
