Buridan, Jean (ca. 1295-ca. 1358)
    

French philosopher who studied under William of Ockham and became a professor at the University of Paris. His impetus theory said that an object placed in motion would remain in motion without needing an external force. This contradicted Aristotle and anticipated Newton.
