We’re sharing important insights on managing project schedules in complex environments, drawn from the paper "Definition of a Float-Based KPI for Disruption Evaluation in Complex Project Schedules" by Alberto Lopez Yus. 📊 🔑 Key Highlights: 📅 Path Float (PF): A metric developed to focus on entire project paths rather than individual activities. PF measures the float within project paths by identifying the true flexibility of the schedule, reducing the risk of disruption by tracking where the most critical paths lie. Unlike traditional total float, which can be misleading due to its potential to aggregate across multiple activities, PF gives a clearer picture by isolating float on a path-by-path basis. 📈 Float Performance Index (FPI): This KPI is designed to measure the remaining time reserves in a project schedule relative to the work left to be completed. FPI is calculated by comparing the Path Float Regression Index (FRI) with the To-Complete Scope Performance Index (TCSPI). This index provides a snapshot of the project’s ability to absorb future disruptions, with values greater than 1 indicating better-than-expected flexibility. 🔧 Overcoming EVM Limitations: The paper critically examines the shortcomings of traditional Earned Value Management (EVM) metrics like Schedule Performance Index (SPI) and Cost Performance Index (CPI). These metrics often fail to account for the nuances of schedule flexibility, especially in complex projects. The introduction of PF and FPI addresses these gaps by offering a more nuanced approach to evaluating schedule health. 📊 Total Float Regression Model: The paper also introduces a regression model that tracks the consumption of total float throughout a project’s lifecycle. This model helps in understanding how much of the schedule's internal flexibility is being used up over time, providing early warning signs if the project is at risk of breaching key milestones. 📈 Practical Application: A detailed example in the paper demonstrates how PF and FPI can be used to track and predict the impact of delays and disruptions on a project. The example shows how these metrics provide more reliable indicators of schedule health than traditional methods.
