🌍 Today we are launching the Fossil Detox Report, outlining the current state of the climate transition and the necessary steps to meet net-zero targets and mitigate climate impacts. The shift from fossil fuels and fossil-based materials to renewable and low-carbon alternatives represents one of the most significant challenges of current times. The report highlights the urgent need for action and for a comprehensive approach to mitigate climate change and to secure a reliable supply of clean energy. The climate transition demands strong political will, public engagement and visionary leadership. In the report, we provide guidance for governments and industry stakeholders on how to close the implementation gap and scale up the solutions we know exists. "Ultimately, transitioning away from fossil fuels and fossil-based materials is not just a technical or economic challenge - it is a societal imperative," says Jonas Gustavsson, President and CEO of AFRY. At AFRY, we believe that it is possible to transition towards a low-carbon economy while also promoting economic growth by implementing innovative technologies and forward-thinking policies. World Hydrogen Conference 2024 in Copenhagen provided valuable insights into the current state of low-carbon hydrogen in its many forms. Here are some key observations from the AFRY team: 💡 This year’s exhibition was dominated by equipment and service providers. Practical aspects of hydrogen production, system integration and usage were central topics, from scaling production capacity and catalyser efficiency to addressing safety standards and automating electrolysers. Low-carbon hydrogen production has reached industrialisation. 💡 Lofty ambitions for green hydrogen have been replaced by a more realistic outlook. Initial larger-scale projects reveal both the technical maturity and the challenges still to be overcome. Manufacturers are quantifying their production and scaling capabilities, complete value chains are emerging, and the financial sector is developing routines for hydrogen projects. While this is promising, current political timeline targets for hydrogen production scaling in Europe still seem overly optimistic. 💡 Maximum achievable production capacity of electrolyser manufacturers can amount to several GW annually, which would align with EU targets. However, actual scaling plans of European and U.S. manufacturers are far more modest. Increased scaling will require firm commitments from developers or subsidies. Manufacturers’ appetite for taking risks on this front is very limited. 💡 The critical role of government funding to establish a foundational hydrogen infrastructure was strongly underlined, as was the fundamental need for this infrastructure to complete the renewables-based low-carbon energy system. 💡 Chinese electrolyser manufacturers are positioning themselves for large projects in Europe and neighbouring regions, with scaling targets surpassing those of international competitors. 💡 Current price projections for electrolyser projects might be inflated. While recent studies estimate total project costs from around 1.5 to over 2 million EUR per MW of rated power, exhibitors reported much lower system sales prices—around 0.7 million EUR per MW for alkaline systems, 1.0 for PEM, 1.2 for Solid Oxide. The difference appears to be contingency. Systematic overestimates would lead to less attractive business cases, less market interest, abandoned projects and slower hydrogen system ramp-up. 💡 Low-carbon hydrogen from natural gas (“blue” hydrogen) remains contentious. Its potential to replace grey hydrogen and aid hydrogen system scaling is significant—one large methane reformer can produce as much hydrogen as around 1 GW of electrolyser capacity. However, stringent best practices for gas leakage prevention are crucial to ensure low carbon footprints. To play a meaningful role, blue hydrogen needs emission transparency and optimised cost-to-capture ratios. Thanks to everyone who visited our booth. We look forward to continuing these conversations. 🌲 AFRY has explored the importance of forests and active sustainable forestry in addressing climate change and contributing to reaching net zero targets by 2050. Drawing on insights from a recent report commissioned by FAM AB, the "substitution effect" of replacing fossil-based materials and products with fibre-based alternatives has the potential to greatly improve climate benefits in the EU. 1️⃣ Fibre-based raw materials can replace fossil-fuel alternatives and significantly reduce emissions. This involves utilising the substitution potential of wood products, paper, board, textile fibres, biofuels and biochemicals to achieve an emission reduction of up to 561 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2050. 2️⃣ Active and sustainable forest management plays an integral role in gaining various economic, climate and social benefits. For example, this approach enhances decarbonisation through improved carbon sinks, and measures can be taken to protect biodiversity by preserving species and their natural habitats in commercial forests. 3️⃣ Utilising forestry residues for bioenergy presents a sustainable energy solution, preventing the release of CO2 into the atmosphere as these materials decompose. This approach can help decrease fossil fuel demand across Europe and reduce climate impacts, especially when combined with carbon capture and storage technologies. 4️⃣ Furthermore, forest-based innovation continues to broaden the range of applications for forest resources and contribute to long-term climate benefits and circularity. For comprehensive insights into the benefits provided by the substitution effect, refer to the full report and reach out to Saara Söderberg, Sami Pastila, Salla-Mari Järvinen and Tiina Pajula. #makingfuture #bioindustry #sustainability #decarbonisation #forestry

🌿⚡ Bioenergy can support the transition to more sustainable energy systems at the whole EU level, as flexibility in energy production is needed. Forestry residues, such as branches, bark and sawdust, release the same amount of CO2 during decomposition and energy use. Without other material use applications, using them as feedstock in energy production enhances the flexibility of the European energy system with the added benefit of substituting fossil fuels in heat generation. In addition, carbon capture and storage technologies can further mitigate emissions associated with bioenergy production. Currently, the Nordic energy model effectively incorporates biomass residues in combined heat and power production. This approach not only optimises energy usage but also frees up hydropower capacity for export to Continental Europe and reduces the overall EU fossil fuel demand in energy production. Integrating bioenergy with carbon capture and storage offers a promising solution for increasing flexibility in sustainable energy production across the EU. We invite you to explore our analysis of various energy sources and flexibility solutions in the full report: https://lnkd.in/d8h5BDuj #makingfuture #bioindustry #sustainability #energytransition #decarbonisation
