In September, Akelius Montreal office on 511 Place d'Armes received BOMA BEST certification. 511 Place d'Armes was built in 1888, and was the first skyscraper in Canada. "The certification proves that we have put our efforts into the right things. I am very proud of the achievement," says Júlio Viana, Head of Montreal. In October, two more Akelius properties received the BOMA BEST certification, on 3014 and 3195 Van Horne Avenue in Montreal. Mid-October, the Akelius property 110 Wellesley Street East in Toronto, won the 2024 CREST Award in the emissions reduction category for multi-unit residential buildings. The project consisted of replacing the atmospheric heating and domestic hot water boilers with energy efficient condensing boilers. In 2024, energy savings was 45 percent compared to prior to the project in 2022, with a carbon emission reduction of 84.9 tonnes. "The carbon emission reduction for this year is equivalent to driving a gasoline car around the world 17 times. Visually, the reduction resembles 15 average sized hot air balloons. And capturing the 84.9 tonnes of carbon emission requires 4,245 trees growing for a year. When making such comparisons, one realizes what a big effect a project like this has on the environment", says Rashmi Nagaraja, Energy Intern at Akelius in Toronto. #sustainability #residentialrealestate #globalrealestate #decarbonization

At the end of September, Akelius Boston team engaged in the Coastsweep Clean Up, a statewide beach cleanup organized each fall by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management. The team helped cleaning 1.5 miles of the Boston shoreline, in front of the Akelius property at 1410 Columbia Road in South Boston. Total debris weight was 32.7 pounds, or 148 kilograms. "We filled four trash bags, mainly with plastic bottle caps and cigarette butts. Several neighbors and community members stopped to thank us for the clean-up. We are excited to do it again next year", says Kayla (Tierney) Pepdjonovic, Head of Boston. #charity #community #cleanup #residentialrealestate #globalrealestate

In September, twenty members of Akelius’s Washington DC team spent an afternoon helping DC Central Kitchen, DCCK, prepare community and school meals. At DCCK, all ingredients are farm to table. They provide food for the less fortunate and for schools and community events, and offer free culinary training programs. "After a safety meeting, we spent two hours preparing food. Our team participated with dicing red and green peppers, shredding kale for kale soup, cutting and breading chicken breasts", says Keith Fagan, R.A, LEED AP, Head of Washington. #charity #community #residentialrealestate #globalrealestate

Last week, Akelius staff got together in Bratislava and Vienna for a week of education, networking, physical activity, and culture. The event re-occurs every second year and is therefore called the Biennial. Each time, the Biennial takes place in a new city. Participants attended role specific education, organized and delivered by the company’s own experts. There was also a plenary session, in which participants gained a better understanding of the Akelius Group. Akelius promotes staff’s health. Participants were able to choose from bicycling 80, 50 or 27 kilometers between Bratislava and Vienna, or walking 7 kilometers. The day started with a get-to-know-new-roles activity on a boat tour along the Danube River. The bicycle day was cold, rainy, and windy. But this did not stop 150 participants from completing their bicycle tour. On the cultural side, participants were invited to a classical concert in the Kursalon in Vienna. The orchestra got standing ovations at the end of the concert. All staff were happy to meet in person again and look forward to the Biennial 2026. #education #culture #staffhealth #globalrealestate photos by Martina Mlčúchová
