A wonderful evening was had by all at The Society’s Biennial Dinner on 17th September! Helen Carless, Chairman of The Society of Fine Art Auctioneers And Valuers (SOFAA), welcomed over 140 guests to the event which was held at Royal Thames Yacht Club Limited.
In her speech, helen carless expressed hope that everyone was enjoying the evening, reconnecting with old friends and colleagues, and taking the opportunity to make new friends.
The Society is grateful to the event sponsors for helping to make it possible, and Helen offered warm votes of thanks to the ATG (Auction Technology Group), Bidpath, Auctionet and CBC Partnership Insurance, with particular acknowledgement to Richard Lewis, Neil Nixon, Niklas Söderholm and Tom Sargent respectively.
Each one of these companies supports the auction and valuation sector in various ways: the Auction Technology Group, through its new cross-listing service, offers access to the largest bidder audience in the US, UK, Germany, Austria and The Netherlands, Bidpath has helped more than 850 auction houses streamline their operations with customised auction management solutions, and Auctionet, having established its position as the premier growth partner to auction houses in the Nordic countries, is now focussed on helping UK auction houses reach their potential through its auction platform. CBC Insurance is at the forefront of understanding the risks facing auctioneers and valuers, it has recently held an insightful Cyber security webinar for SOFAA members.
Helen reviewed the last year – referring to successful SOFAA training and social visits for our membership: including to The Burrell Collection, LYON & TURNBULL LIMITED, an important private house and collection, and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; future plans include a Banksy Tour in Bristol. SOFAA also engaged with Rakhi Talwar to offer AML training videos and support.
SOFAA is proud and delighted to be part of two educational initiatives that encourage greater diversity within our sector: ‘The Art Market Co-ordinator’ Apprenticeship qualification, with Toby Monk from Christie's at the helm, and working with John Benjamin from The Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars and Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers, to roll-out an introductory careers day at auction houses for sixth form students. Both will be launched in 2025.
The Society Committee is made up of people from throughout our industry: Gavin Strang, Ian Cadzow, Guy Schooling, Tom Christopherson, Susan Orringe MRICS and Elizabeth Chilcott, Helen thanked members of the committee for the support and advice that they give to her and the members, she also highlighted this recently launched LinkedIn page – a place to catch up on SOFAA news and events.
When Helen finished speaking, Liz Chilcott, on behalf of the committee and all attending, proposed a toast of thanks to Helen - Helen was enthusiastically applauded by everyone present. Afterwards the party continued …
