Last week, we welcomed our next group of Sustainable Leaders in North America for an inspiring three day session of our Sustainable Leadership program. This program is designed to equip our leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to drive meaningful change and performance within our organization. As we continue to evolve and strengthen our mills, the role of sustainable leaders becomes even more crucial. Dennis Perpich, Senior Vice President of Operations, emphasized the importance of this program: “Sustainable Leadership provides essential tools and training for our leaders. Having the chance to speak directly to participants gave me the opportunity to reinforce that leadership growth only comes with a commitment and desire to grow through application and experience.” Brad Nurmela, Operations Vice President of Quinnesec Mill and Wisconsin Rapids Converting Facility, said: “It is always good to see the investment being made into our leaders through sustainable leadership training. As we move forward and face the challenges of our current markets, it will be essential to have sustainable leaders to lead the necessary change.” Together, we’re building a strong network of leaders dedicated to both developing their teams and themselves. Here’s to our collective journey toward a more sustainable future! 🌍✨

Sustainable packaging took the spotlight at Scanpack 2024 in Gothenburg! Emma Hellqvist from Billerud presented how Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and our new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are helping the packaging industry meet crucial sustainability standards. A key takeaway? Use supplier-specific data—European averages can reflect emissions up to 10 times higher than those from Europe’s leading mills, such as Billerud’s. With our Packaging Sustainability Tool, we’re empowering brands to make more informed and sustainable packaging decisions. Visit our website to learn more 🔎

Established in 1985, Billerud’s Quinnesec Mill originally focused on pulp production, the mill expanded into paper manufacturing in 1990. As a result of the modern design of the facility, environmental compliance was at the top of the list of considerations during construction. The Quinnesec Mill is well laid out from a stormwater perspective and can treat all process wastewater onsite. The facility also has a robust land application program where wastewater residuals are used as soil amendments in partnership with local farmers. Quinnesec Mill was acquired by Billerud in 2022. With over 400 employees, the production unit has a solid capacity of 640,000 tons of pulp and paper annually, operating on a 2,200-acre site. Since 2001, the Quinnesec Mill has held the esteemed Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Star facility designation under the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP). The MVPP Star certification is the state’s highest recognition for workplace safety programs and performance. Moreover, the Quinnesec Mill received its ISO 14001 certification in 2008 which underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability. 🚀 Continue to follow our journey, next stop the future.
