The first results of the SOLARIO trial were announced at the EBJIS (European Bone & Joint Infection Society) meeting in Barcelona. This multi-centre randomised controlled open label non-inferiority investigated whether the duration of systemic antibiotic therapy can be limited to <7 days provided local antibiotics are used. Martin McNally presented the findings that there was no difference in the groups irrespective of analysis by intention-to-treat or by per protocol analysis and also no difference when looking at definite failure, or by definite, probably and possible failures. this game changing study will change practice and means all the cost and associated side-effects of systemic antibiotic therapy can be avoided beyond the first week after surgery. This is a real step forward in antibiotic stewardship and will result in big savings in healthcare expenditure. Congratulations to all the collaborating study centres!
