New publication Martin Henning (University of Gothenburg) and Luís Carvalho (Universidade do Porto) on “Boundary objects and boundary work: Making exchange possible in a pluralistic economic geography”, published in Progress in Economic Geography. The authors argue that Economic Geography as a diverse field can benefit from ‘engaged pluralism.’ They propose the idea of ‘trading zones’ to bridge the gap between specialized research and complex societal issues, enhancing collaboration and dynamism within the discipline. Om oss
The Center for Regional Analysis (CRA) is a collaboration between the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg and the Region Västra Götaland (VGR), which brings together researchers with knowledge and interest in regional transformation and growth. We work for a closer dialogue between research on regional economic conditions and practical applications, for example in the area of regional policy. We are contributing by publishing new research results, giving lectures, seminars and teaching (e.g. through economic geography courses), and participation in podcasts.

Roman Martin has been promoted to Professor in Economic Geography! ➡ Congratulations Roman, can you tell us more about your research? - Thank you for the congratulations! My research covers several interconnected themes within economic geography. A major focus for me is the economic geography of #innovation and regional development. Regional development is influenced by many factors, including economic structures, social dynamics, and institutional arrangements at regional, national, and supranational levels. The complexity of regional development makes it a fascinating and never boring research area. ➡ What are you focusing on right now and what kind of societal impact can the result of this research have? - Right now, I am exploring how regional economies respond to various shocks and crises. Given the ongoing climate crisis, I am particularly interested in how regional economies can transition toward greater environmental #sustainability. - Our economy and society face major challenges that require not only technological advancements but also societal and economic transitions. Therefore, it is important to understand how regions and industries develop and shift into new fields. What are the responsibilities of private firms versus the state? How can policy support a green transition? And how can consumers contribute? - By addressing these questions, my research provides insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders in Europe. Ultimately, I hope to contribute knowledge that supports sustainable economic growth. As researchers and teachers, we cannot solve all grand challenges, but we can add smaller pieces of knowledge to the big puzzle of sustainable economic development. 💠Roman Martin is Professor in Economic Geography at the Department of Business Administration (Företagsekonomiska institutionen, Handelshögskolan) at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg (Handelshögskolan vid Göteborgs universitet) and affiliated researcher within Gothenburg U-GOT KIES. CRA Phd candidate Yifei Wang participated at a PhD course in Oslo, organised by NORSI - Nordic Research School in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. We are greatful to be part of this excellent research network!
In April, Alisa Chabanyuk, Johannes Tröndle, and Yifei Wang, three early scholar members of Gothenburg U-GOT KIES (Centre on knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystems), participated in the course "Innovation, Welfare and Policy" at TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation, and Culture at the Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) | University of Oslo. ➡ This course was centered around the topic of investigating the dark sides of innovation means to study its unintended and negative consequences, alongside its positive effects. In short, extant innovation research has adopted a narrow definition of social welfare, which focuses on positive economic performance and material well-being, and that mostly disregards the corresponding destruction effects, and therefore also distributional impacts of innovation. ➡ The course introduced economic and non-economic agents´ of well-being, the notion of aggregate social welfare, the trade-offs between efficiency and equity, and a foundation of R&D innovation policies. Summarized the multi-dimensional and complex nature of innovation presents policy-makers with a variety of trade-offs and complex choice sets, which call for the development of new tools of social choice analysis.
