Palestine - Call for papers    Submit papers for the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) latest call, focused on Palestine. The coming issue will explore the devastating conflict in Palestine and implications for architectural design, research, and education. The call invites contributions that “evidence how bombing, demolition, destruction, ruination, and scorched earth constitute military strategies planned and implemented for decades to fragment, debilitate and destroy Palestinian built, social, economic, cultural, and natural environments.”    The deadline for submissions is 25 January, 2025. There are four categories, including Essay, Design, Narrative, and Image. Submissions are welcome that challenge conventional politics and form. Theme editors include Nora Akawi (The Cooper Union), Nick Estes (University of Minnesota), Omar Jabary Salamanca (Université Libre de Bruxelles), and Zoé Samudzi (Clark University). My proposal, “Make a Maker”, got accepted for the International Conference on Design Principles & Practices in Singapore LASALLE College of the Arts in Februrary! 🤯 It started as this idea of design as pure disruption a “Paradigm Smasher” kinda thing, trashing old systems and norms and making way for something better. We need a why. So, "Make a Maker" has evolved into this framework for ethical, intentional action, and for a more meaningful impact and it is incorporating what I'm calling "Moral Aesthetic Action". Here's a sneak peek into what I’m going to be unpacking in Singapore (it's all still a work-in-progress): The Evolution of Disruption: From just “smashing” norms to building ethical, actionable change. A Deep Dive into Collaboration: Exploring not just if we work together, but how we can work to empower more diverse voices. The Power of Iteration: How a messy, adaptable, learning-based approach can get us much further than a straight line. Navigating the Grey Areas of Complexity: Making sense of messy systems and moving with an adaptable and curious mindset. The core question I’m exploring is: how can we move design beyond just solving problems, and use it to create a better world through intentional action, self-reflection, and genuine connection? It's less of a blueprint and more of a mindset, you know? A journey of becoming an agent of meaningful change. I'm still deep in the thick of developing these ideas, so any and all thoughts, feedback, or shared experiences are hugely welcome. It's a constant learning experience, and I'd love to bring some other perspectives to the table for the presentation (and booklet!) More to come as I continue this evolution! Stay tuned!
