An agency of the European Union
Om oss
EU Agency The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency which aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden. Our Mission: To identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by communicable diseases. Further to this, the ECDC works to provide timely information to the European Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health. In order to achieve this mission, ECDC works in partnership with national health protection bodies across Europe to strengthen and develop continent-wide disease surveillance and early warning systems. By working with experts throughout Europe, ECDC pools Europe's health knowledge to develop authoritative scientific opinions about the risks posed by current and emerging infectious diseases. Data on measles cases in the EU/EEA for the last twelve months show a considerable rise in notifications compared to 2023. This is a sign that the virus is circulating in the region and the number of cases will probably increase during the spring of 2025. Immunisation with two doses of the #MMR vaccine is the safest and most effective way to protect against this highly contagious disease. However, eight out of ten people who were diagnosed with measles in the EU/EEA in the last year were not vaccinated. Adults and parents are encouraged to check their vaccination history and, if in doubt, consult a healthcare professional. Read the full ECDC update: https://lnkd.in/dSV3MTxS

🚨 Strengthening health security: EU initiative work programme 2025 launched🚨 The EU Initiative on Health Security has unveiled its 2025 work programme, setting out key actions to enhance public health capacities across EU candidate and potential candidate countries, as well as European Neighbourhood Policy partner countries. This initiative plays a vital role in reinforcing regional cooperation to address cross-border health threats. 🔎 Key activities for 2025 include: ✔ MediPIET field epidemiology training to strengthen national expertise. ✔ Workshops on epidemic intelligence, risk assessment, and infodemic management to boost rapid response capabilities. ✔ Collaboration to enhance knowledge sharing and align with European public health systems. ✔ Annual meetings and scientific events to foster regional dialogue and continuous learning. Through tailored capacity-building efforts, this initiative empowers public health professionals in the EU's Eastern- and Southern neighbourhood regions with the skills needed to detect, assess, and respond effectively to infectious disease threats. 📖 Read the full brochure to learn more ➡️ https://bit.ly/4iyT7Bj

Learn with us about building basic bioinformatics workflows - another of our #GenEpiBioTrain programme courses is coming soon! 📅 19 and 21 March ⏰ 9:00AM - 12:30PM 🌐 Register here ➡️ https://bit.ly/4iuhvnA 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴? A key bioinformatics skill is using command-line tools for whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis. Automation starts with small workflows but becomes sustainable through pipelines, requiring expertise in tools like Snakemake and Nextflow. Learning basic workflows is the first step toward building pipelines. In this course, participants will set up basic workflows for raw read QC, genome assembly, and antimicrobial resistance genotyping. They will also explore how to extend these workflows with various bioinformatics tools and adapt them into scalable pipelines. Although workflow management systems such as Snakemake and Nextflow are not covered in this course, participants will gain relevant skills for the automation of bioinformatic analyses. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿? Beginners in bioinformatics and everyone interested in learning more about command-line tools and bioinformatics workflows. Participants are expected to have some familiarity with navigating and interacting with Unix terminals, creating and running simple bash scripts, and creating and working with virtual environments through the Conda ecosystem. When you enrol to the course, you will also get access to the recordings after the live sessions. #Bioinformatics #Training #PublicHealth

#JustPublished! Joint European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) - European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Rapid Outbreak Assessment on the widespread salmonella outbreak in the EU/EEA linked to sprouted seeds. Public health authorities across Europe are investigating a prolonged and widespread Salmonella outbreak linked to sprouted alfalfa seeds. Since January 2023, 509 cases have been reported across nine EU/EEA countries, with Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Germany being the most affected. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: - Sprouted seeds identified as the source - Linked to a single supplier in Italy - Multiple Salmonella strains detected, some rarely seen in Europe 𝗪𝗵𝗼’𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸? Infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are most vulnerable. If you're in a risk group, avoid eating raw sprouted seeds - cook them thoroughly to reduce the risk! Producers are urged to strictly follow food safety protocols to prevent contamination. Investigations are ongoing to find the contamination source and stop the outbreak.
