An agency of the European Union
Om oss
EU Agency The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency which aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden. Our Mission: To identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by communicable diseases. Further to this, the ECDC works to provide timely information to the European Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health. In order to achieve this mission, ECDC works in partnership with national health protection bodies across Europe to strengthen and develop continent-wide disease surveillance and early warning systems. By working with experts throughout Europe, ECDC pools Europe's health knowledge to develop authoritative scientific opinions about the risks posed by current and emerging infectious diseases. ECDC’s director Dr Pamela Rendi-Wagner is in Copenhagen at the 74th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe with Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety. "We cannot act alone if we want to respond to health threats successfully. Close cooperation with our partners at all levels is essential". She also met with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. It was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of close collaboration between the two agencies for global health security preparedness. They have agreed to meet soon to talk about next steps towards a healthier, more resilient future. #RC74CPH

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the European Parliament Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) to ECDC to introduce them to our work and to discuss the future of public health in Europe. We presented how the agency supports EU member states and the role it plays in global health, had productive discussions on our reinforced mandate, restoring trust in science, and surveillance of infectious diseases in the EU. A lot of focus was put on key topics such as antimicrobial resistance, vaccine-preventable diseases, STIs and responding to emerging health threats. Many thanks for your visit and great discussions held in Stockholm Elena Nevado Del Campo, Andras Kulja MD and Marta Temido. #AntimicrobialResistance #AMR #PublicHealth #SANT #STIs #Vaccination #InfectiousDiseases

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) hosted the first meeting of the ECDC Methodology Advisory Group (MAG) this week. The MAG group is composed of 18 members with expertise in evidence synthesis methods, development of advice and recommendations, as well as public health and infectious disease prevention and control, from renowned national and international institutions. ECDC Director Dr Pamela Rendi-Wagner welcomed the group, reminding that transparent and rigorous evidence-based decision-making is crucial to regain the trust of citizens in public health institutions: "𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑐 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ 𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠. 𝐾𝑒𝑒𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑘𝑒𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑠𝑡". She emphasised that the work of the MAG is an important cornerstone to improve and strengthen the use of evidence at ECDC to transform public health practice and policy. The meeting aimed at discussing the needs and gaps for translating existing methods guidance into user-friendly and practical toolkits for developing public health advice and recommendations, including rapid advice. One of the main conclusions of the meeting was a strong commitment and agreement from the MAG to work collaboratively to define the content and design priorities for these new methodological guidance and toolkits for public health professionals. ECDC and the MAG are supported in this endeavour by a consortium of four institutions (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Cochrane Deutschland, Cochrane Austria, and Norwegian Institute of Public Health), the MEDIATE consortium. #ECDC4PublicHealth #systematicreview #evidencesynthesis #evidencereviews #evidenceappraisal #evidencereporting #evidencebaseddecisionmaking #scientificadvice #needsassessment #gapanalysis #evidencebasedmethodology #trust #uncertainties

That’s a wrap! Last week, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) held the 10th edition of the ECDC observership. From 14 to 18 October, 31 observers from ESCMID - European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, European Committee on Infection Control and European Society for Clinical Virology came to Stockholm to learn more about the agency and to understand key public health concepts. WHY? - Why was ECDC created? WHAT? - What does ECDC do? HOW? - How does ECDC do it? They got the opportunity to practice what it is like to work at ECDC, using real life examples. We hope they left feeling that this experience was relevant to their work, rewarding and insightful into the world of the EU public health. #ECDCObservership10 #ECDC4PublicHealth #cohort2024

It's that time of the year again, and we want YOU to stay healthy! Autumn and winter are when the flu virus circulates widely, making many of us feel under the weather. While some may experience mild symptoms like a runny nose and cough, it can be far more serious for those in risk groups: the elderly, children, pregnant women, immunosuppressed patients, or people with chronic medical conditions. Healthcare professionals should also consider getting the flu shot to protect themselves and the vulnerable groups they tend to. So… Don’t let the flu be your Achilles’ heel! 🏛️ Follow these simple steps to feel like a Greek god all flu season long: 💪 Get vaccinated if you are in a risk group! 🤧 Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. 😷 If you experience symptoms – wear a facemask. 🧴 Wash your hands – OFTEN and WELL! 🏠 Stay home when feeling sick.
