Quick flashback to another amazing and important event arranged by the "1.6 & 2.6 Million Club", a Swedish non-profit organization founded by Alexandra Charles and focused on women's health and equality in medical research and education, and supporting scientists in these fields. At this year's "Woman in Red" event, brain health and heart health were program highlights. Miia Kivipelto, Mai-Lis Hellenius, Ylva Trolle Lagerros and Wilhelmina Hoffman discussed and gave updates on lifestyle-oriented dementia prevention research and dementia care. A panel with Karin. Schenck-Gustafsson, John Pernow and Cecilia Linde covered the latest in heart research. All framed with music entertainment and crowned with the scholarship ceremony rewarding young scientists, in the presence of the Swedish Minister for Health Care Acko Ankarberg Johansson. When it was founded in 1998, there were 1.6 million women over 45 years in Sweden. Ten years later, the 2.6 Million Club was added, for women 25+. 💡 Are the findings from the #FINGER study generalizable to different settings in the Swedish context; memory clinic, primary care, and municipalities? 💡 How can the FINGER model be adapted and implemented across socioeconomically diverse populations? These are two of the research questions set forth in the FINGER-Pro project, engaging a total of 11 partners, and funded by the Forte - Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare. Warm thanks to our Japanese and Nordic partners and colleagues of the NJ-FINGERS project for our productive meeting in Helsinki this week! 🤝 Both being super-aging societies and facing similar challenges, the Japanese and Nordic regions work together to investigate the feasibility, adherence, and efficacy of multidomain dementia preventive interventions. Comparing observational data and harmonized trial datasets from the #FINGER, MIND-AD, and J-MINT studies, we are investigating prevention mechanisms in the trial populations and making great progress towards developing joint multifactorial risk prediction models. Thank you to our host Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) who also arranged a mini-symposium for a larger audience, with professors Pekka Puska, Hidenori Arai 荒井秀典 and Miia Kivipelto. "Every day counts". This is the title of the updated national dementia strategy for 2025-2028 presented today by the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (Regeringskansliet, Socialdepartementet). Covering healthcare, dental care, and social welfare, the new strategy puts increased focus on prevention, detection, and personalized healthcare and social care, as well as tailored support to next of kin. Two perspectives form the basis for the strategy: 🤝 Dementia is not part of normal aging. Evidence and knowledge about prevention and risk reduction must permeate all efforts in dementia healthcare and social care. 🤝 Persons living with dementia must get the support and care they need to live a dignified and meaningful life, including early detection and tailored treatment. For the nearest years, the government grants funding to regional collaboration and support, including further development of municipal evidence-based dementia care, and to institutions working to spread knowledge and hold data registers for research.
