The tropical peatlands and their flora have been a focus of Kew researchers for over ten years, with a well-established professional network in the Amazon and Congo basins delivering peat distribution maps, ecology, management, and climate mitigation. This knowledge and tradition are being passed on to future generations through integration into school curricula and awareness programmes. 🌿 As #COP16 concludes, we reflect on what the outcomes mean for nature, people, and the upcoming climate summit in Azerbaijan.   Here are our top 5 takeaways 👇   1️⃣  𝗔 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 #𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗜𝗣&𝗟𝗖𝘀): In one way, the ‘COP of the people’ delivered, with a major win for in the creation of a new permanent body, which will allow them to defend their rights and traditional knowledge more effectively. This new platform recognises IP&LCs as partners in decision making on tackling biodiversity loss.   2️⃣ 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲:  Disappointment remains as critical decisions on resource mobilization and the financial mechanism were not finalized. Without direct channels for #naturefinance to reach IPs and LCs, progress risks stalling. Current pledges to the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) fell drastically short—only $163 million versus the $30 billion/year target needed by 2030. This is only 0.5% of the target we need to reach within the next 6 years.   3️⃣ 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲: Negotiations saw attempts to weaken language on human rights and gender equality, with minimal pushback. This signals a troubling shift compared to previous agreements, impacting the integrity of future biodiversity actions.   4️⃣ 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁: Efforts to integrate gender considerations faced setbacks, with some parties resisting language on gender-responsive approaches and #genderequality. While there were wins for more inclusive dialogue, the absence of specific funding risks leaving gender equality untracked and unfulfilled.   5️⃣ 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: The establishment of the Cali Fund, designed to compensate countries for the use of genetic information, offers hope. It will be essential to ensure that proceeds benefit the IPs and LCs who steward global #biodiversity.   🌎 This sets a poor precedent for the upcoming discussions on a new climate finance target (New Collective Quantified Goal - NCQG) at COP29 in Baku in just over one weeks’ time. Thriving biodiversity is crucial for a healthy climate, we can not achieve one without the other.
