I-conic is aiming to become the core of the 4D video revolution. In a 4D video you can move freely in the three dimensions of space, plus in the time domain. It is like a computer game where you move in an animated world – but with the exception that this a 4D model of the real world, created in real-time. You can enjoy it in real-time, we then call it 3DLive, or you can use it for replays or analytics afterwards. I-conic’s 4D solution is based on simultaneous video from two or more drones, although it will work also for video cameras on the ground. We have applied for a patent for 4D solutions based on moving cameras. With this new technology a field fire department officer will get a complete understanding on what going on at the fire site and also what it looked like minutes earlier and from any point of view; the security officer could get similar information about a crowd outside a football stadium; defence operators could get an improved understanding of what is going on at the other side of the hill; movie makers and advertisement producers would get new tools to create artistic works with; researchers can study natural events, like rivers/waves, trees, animals and other moving objects in ways that have not been possible before; and the general public could create their own 4D video clip mimicking famous scenes from “The Matrix”. Yes, you’ve probably guessed it already – we’re not really there yet. 3DLive does not yet exist. However, we have made a proof-of-concept, where we process two video streams into 3D point clouds at double video rate, 50 frames per second. Follow us here on LinkedIn, and we’ll keep you updated. Onboard processing project delivered I-CONIC Vision have concluded a 1-year project with the Swedish National Space Agency for development of photogrammetric processing software on real space hardware. I-CONIC have for a number of years been developing unique software for extremely efficient processing of video and imagery into 3D models and related products. This project included adapting I-CONIC’s existing drone software for satellite data and onboard processing. Two crucial problems affect time-critical workflows for satellite image analysis: a) too long a time from data capture to analysis and b) too large data sets for efficient download to the ground stations. Therefore, there is a trend in the industry to find ways to start analysing the data already onboard, to minimise amount of data and to minimise time. For most applications correct georeferencing is required, and processing onboard requires a computer platform that is adapted to image data processing. A good example of that is Unibap’s SpaceCloud, which was used in the project. After the certification process, Oskar Flordal of Unibap stated: “I-CONIC has showcased their software, which generates point clouds in various scenes using an iX10 development system (ADS). This technology operates at a speed adequate for common scenarios of producing point clouds and height maps. This process is executed over specified areas using high-resolution RGB cameras, considering the need for a wide baseline in Earth observation. Such innovation holds promise for enhancing edge computing in space. Generating point clouds in space could contribute to other applications, such as feeding into neural networks for change detection or enabling compression for ground-based visualization algorithms. UAVaid and I-CONIC Partnership for Drone Mapping and Emergency Assessment. In a significant stride towards speeding up the emergency response to large-scale disasters and global development in remote areas, UK-based drone specialist UAVaid team up with I-CONIC Vision to develop solutions that will provide responders and NGOs with faster creation of large maps and Rapid Area Modelling. Typically, current methods can take days to create large 3D digital models of the landscape. However, with this partnering of technologies, near real-time assessments will become a reality, significantly enhancing emergency response to ultimately save more lives and speeding up the delivery of development projects.
