We are hugely excited to be supporting this team of military veterans who in March next year are entering the Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra, a race that that will test them all mentally and physically. We are putting their bodies through extreme colds and fatigue in support of SSAFA the Armed Forces charity. The team, which I think you will agree is absolutely first rate, is made up of: Aldo Kane Brian Wood MC Karl Hinnet Jason Fox The Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra is 500km long and takes place in Swedish Lapland, starting and finishing in the small town of Överkalix. The team will cross into the Arctic Circle twice over the race route. They have up to two weeks to complete the course by foot. It is a test of extreme endurance set against the harsh beauty of snow-covered forests and icy lakes. Jådåt Adventure will put them through their paces (literally and metaphorically) on a training camp in early January where they will learn and refresh on extreme cold weather techniques and practice team race routines ready for the event. We're looking forward to this one and we can't think of a better group of people to start the season with. We are a team of military veterans who early next year will take part in a race that will test us all mentally and physically. We are putting our bodies on the line again to support SSAFA the Armed Forces charity. The Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra will take place on snowmobile trails in Swedish Lapland, starting and finishing is in the small town of Överkalix. The 500km self supported Ultra race is divided into two stages, the first of 185km, the second of 315km. Following these routes the team will cross twice into the Arctic circle - the land of the midnight sun, and, of course, where one might find the home of Father Christmas. The course can take up to two weeks to complete (9 days is a good target), by foot and many don't make it. It is a test of extreme endurance set against the harsh beauty of snow-covered forests and icy lakes. ❄ Expedition update… We've got some unfortunate news to share from Sam on the ice. The Antarctic world record attempt has been cut short. Sam has been flown off the ice due to a suspected kidney infection. After 32 days on the ice, skiing solo and unsupported for over 600km, Sam started to experience some discomfort. As the pain worsened and other symptoms began to show Sam sought medical advice. Despite Sam wanting to push on, the medical team intervened due to the risk to his physical wellbeing and the potential implications to his long term health if left untreated. At 22:40 on Thursday night (UK time) the decision was made to extract him from the ice, with a plane now on its way to take Sam to hospital for further tests and treatment. From the ice, Sam messaged his expedition team saying; “It’s devastating to be forced to cut the expedition short. Despite some challenging conditions I was feeling good and my momentum was building into an important stage of the expedition. “I want to continue, but in the end the decision was taken out of my hands. “It’s difficult to put into words the disappointment. It’s been three and a half years of planning and preparation.” Sam will now being flown to a hospital in Chile where he’ll undergo tests and treatment, before heading back to the UK. Despite being medically withdrawn from his world record attempt, Sam managed to cover 600km of tough Antarctic terrain, including 1,100 metres of elevation. “It’s too early to say about another attempt” he said. “However, the first 600km felt good, and there was plenty more in the tank.” Abi, Sam’s wife and a key part of his expedition team, added; “He’s incredible and given this expedition everything. I know how much he would have been pushing to carry on, however I’m glad that there are an amazing team of medical professionals supporting him to make those tough calls. “The most important thing is for him to come back safely and in good health.” Sam has been supported by Team Forces and Resilient Nutrition.

While in Antarctica, Sam is recording daily voice notes to help the Austrian Space Forum better understand the impacts of time spent in desolate environments. Alexandra de Carvalho at the space forum, said: “The first thing to consider is the sheer isolation of this challenge. Two months with extremely minimal human contact is not something to be underestimated." Other factors like 24 hour daylight and sensory deprivation will likely impact Sam's psychological state - something the Space Forum will be looking at closely. #antarctica #norway #sweden #training #expedition #logistics #expedfit #fitness #resilience #worldrecord #skiing #wildcamping #snow #psychology #isolation

❄ Expedition update… On Tuesday 12th December, Sam made it onto the mainland of Antarctica, having already travelled across the ice shelf. Later on in the week, Sam had to tackle a steep step which, with his heavy pulk, wasn’t possible in one go. He had decanted and taken up everything over several trips, meaning he had to go back on himself and complete a 14 hour day. Sam made it to the Salee Snowfields from where it's a much steadier climb to the pole. On Saturday, Sam said: "The mountains are great to look at and are a nice reference point to navigate to and provide a nice visual representation of progression throughout the day. "The pulk now glides on top of the surface rather than through it - a revelation! "I drank around 3.5L of water today, which is quite a lot for what is meant to be a frozen desert. I’m not saying anything as I’m sure the plateau will offer some incredibly cold days…" Yesterday Sam had excellent conditions: sunny, a slight breeze and a firm surface. He managed 25.5km, which is the furthest he's gone in a single day since the first week. He said: "I’m working my way out of the mountain range now and I should be on the edge this time tomorrow. I’m pleased with today’s work so I’ll go to bed with a smile tonight!" #antarctica #southpole #expedition #resilience #trek #ski #skitouring #crosscountryskiing #worldrecord
