🌟 This week, Lund Stem Cell Center was honored to host Dr. Sergiu P. Pașca, Kenneth T. Norris Jr. Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, as part of our Stem Cell Stars Seminar Series. Dr. Pasca, a leader in psychiatry and neuroscience, shared his research on human neural circuits in a talk titled, "Constructing and Deconstructing the Human Nervous System to Study Development and Disease." The seminar, chaired by Professor Malin Parmar, offered fascinating insights into Dr. Pasca’s work with neural organoids and assembloids—3D cellular structures that provide a deeper understanding of brain development and disease mechanisms. Our thanks to Dr. Pasca and all attendees who engaged in vibrant discussions and enjoyed networking over refreshments at our post-seminar gathering. It was inspiring to bring together the Lund University community to discuss such exciting advancements. Don't miss the final Stem Cell Stars Seminar of the year on 07 November! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dYWWBxJR 📸 Photo: Dr. Sergiu P. 🧬 🔍 Researchers at Lund Stem Cell Center have made a new discovery about how the human genome protects itself from disruption during critical stages of life. In their recent study in Nature Communications, the team led by Christopher Douse, including doctoral student and first-author Ninoslav Pandiloski and postdoctoral researcher Vivien Horvath, discovered how two key mechanisms—DNA methylation and the HUSH complex—work together to safeguard genomic stability. The study details the role of the HUSH complex and its partner protein, MORC2, in silencing repetitive #DNA as DNA methylation weakens, with potential implications for #aging and disease research. Dr. Christopher Douse, head of the Epigenetics and Chromatin Dynamics Research Group at Lund Stem Cell Center explains, “We’re fascinated by these weird and wonderful parts of our genomes. Once disregarded as silent and non-functional, there is more and more evidence that repeats are significant players in human health and disease.” Read more about their findings ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/dbu2k8j5 #Genomics #Epigenetics #StemCellResearch #GenomicStability #RepetitiveGenome

🏆 Congratulations to Joan Yuan, recipient of the 2024 Eric K. Fernström Award for young successful researchers at Lund University! Joan Yuan, Associate Professor of Immunology at Lund University and leader of the Developmental Immunology Research Group at Lund Stem Cell Center, has been recognized for her contributions to our understanding of #hematopoiesis and the immune system. Her research focuses on how genetic programs and early life events shape the immune system, with a particular emphasis on B-cell memory. These insights have important implications for the development of improved #vaccination strategies and #immunotherapies. Reflecting on her research, Joan Yuan says: "In fetal life and when we are babies, our immune system is at its most malleable and receptive to learning about the outside world. It is our B-cells that create our immunological memory. By tagging these early B-cells in mice with a fluorescent protein, we can follow them throughout life to see what immune responses they contribute and how they differ from other immune cells."
