Cross-industry collaboration is one of the most important tools we have when it comes to addressing the most pressing challenges facing our profession. Today, we're honored to host the 23rd annual Pet Healthcare Industry Summit, bringing industry leaders and students together to create a more sustainable future for veterinary medicine. As part of meaningful discussions centered on access to care, environmental sustainability, and veterinary education, we announced: - A grant to Shelters United to address a critical need for U.S. pet rescues and shelters. The investment will enable a free, RACE-approved veterinarian of record (VOR) training to increase access to veterinary care for adoptable pets and make it easier for veterinarians profession-wide (including our Associates) to give back to their local communities. - Our founding sponsorship of the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance (VSA) to enable the development of new tools to help veterinary professionals industry-wide practice sustainable medicine. The veterinary community plays an important role in #OneHealth, combatting the growing threat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses to both human and animal health. Through judicious use of antibiotics, veterinary professionals can help ensure antibiotics remain effective by prescribing only when warranted. To support antimicrobial stewardship in our network of global practices and across the profession, Mars Veterinary Health, including Banfield Pet Hospital, partnered with University of Guelph, and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to examine how co-morbidities influence antimicrobial usage during canine and feline dental procedures. This study--the broadest of its kind to date--highlights the need to create and refine evidence-based guidelines on responsible antibiotic use in veterinary dentistry to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining the highest medical quality. Additionally, two of the study's authors, Mars Veterinary Health's Dr. JoAnn Morrison and UC Davis' Dr. Maria Soltero-Rivera, DVM, DAVDC, will lead detailed discussions at the 2024 Veterinary Dental Forum (VDF) in Palm Springs, California on Thursday, September 26. During the Veterinary Innovation Council's Veterinary Innovation Summit last week, our own Jonathan Lustgarten, MS, PhD, VMD, CSPO took the stage to discuss the keys to develop and deploy high-quality, medical-grade AI solutions in clinical settings.
