Swedish national facility providing researchers with bright X-rays to make the invisible visible
Om oss
MAX IV Laboratory is a national synchrotron laboratory for research performed usingn X-rays. MAX IV Laboratory has operated successfully for more than 30 years and is currently commissioning and operating the new MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund. Up to 3 000 scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world will come to the MAX IV Laboratory every year to use the x-rays and do research in areas such as physics, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine, materials science, structural biology and nanotechnology. The MAX IV facility, the largest and most ambitious Swedish investment in research infrastructure, is the most advanced source of x-rays worldwide replacing the former MAX-lab. Some 240 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory and we will welcome many skilled and curious persons to our staff during the coming years. MAX IV Laboratory is located in Lund, Sweden.

MAX IV Laboratory omdelade detta
A week ago MAX IV invited the public for Open Day in the occasion of Lund Kulturnatten 2024. We at DanMAX decided to show the power of diffraction using our home-built model laser beamline, complete with a "scintillator" detector and custom software for live analysis. At the model beamline, guests could measure the width of their hair with diffraction, mimicking a real X-ray diffraction experiment. Here is the statistical break down of all* 130 measurements. Thanks to all who participated! *Categories with fewer than five observations have been excluded.

MAX IV Laboratory omdelade detta
Today marks an exciting step forward for international scientific collaboration as we signed two new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Korean Basic Science Institute (KBSI) and the Center for Ultrafast Phase Transformation (CUPT) at Sogang University. This milestone event, held at the Korean Embassy in Stockholm, crowns two days of workshops at MAX IV in Lund, where we exchanged ideas and discussed future collaboration with our Korean partners. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to His Excellency Mr. Hyung Jong Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Sweden, for hosting this significant occasion. My thanks also extend to Mr. Heewoong Park, Director of the Korea-Nordics Science & Technology Cooperation Center (KNTEC). Special thanks also to Dr. Sung-Kwang Yang, President of KBSI, and Professor Hyunjung Kim from CUPT for their commitment to advancing our shared scientific goals. Additionally, State Secretary Maria Nilsson’s presence underscored Sweden’s commitment to global scientific excellence. Tomorrow, the first concrete step in our collaboration begins with a meeting between the 4GSR project and the Accelerator Division at MAX IV. This workshop has covered a broad spectrum of topics related to design of fourth-generation synchrotron facilities, laying the groundwork for many fruitful exchanges in the coming years. These partnerships are particularly timely as Korea joins Horizon Europe, offering even greater potential for collaboration across our institutions. Both MAX IV Laboratory and KBSI are embarking on major projects with new light source developments—the fourth-generation synchrotron in Ochang and the plans for the MAX 4U upgrade—and CUPT’s work in X-ray photon science promises to be a cornerstone of our future joint efforts. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of Lars Hammarström, Science & Innovation Counsellor, and Seyeong Yoon, Science & Innovation Advisor at the Embassy of Sweden in Seoul, who played important roles in bringing these MoUs to fruition. Looking forward to the many exciting projects, exchanges, and workshops that will result from this collaboration! #ScienceCollaboration #SynchrotronResearch #MAXIV #KBSI #CUPT #KoreaSwedenPartnership #HorizonEurope #Innovation #Ubildningsdepartementet
