I’ve (Anders Sjöberg) started a new chapter in my career and am really proud to have the chance to work with skilled and friendly colleagues at Mercuri Urval Research Institute (MU RI) and Mercuri Urval (MU). MU was founded in 1967 (I was three years old!) with the aim of helping leaders become more successful and achieve the best possible results for their organisations. MU continues to offer advisory expertise and a unique science-based ability to identify, assess, and develop the right specialists and leaders to meet clients' needs. To further improve MU's methods, the MU RI was established, conducting its own research and staying updated on the latest trends and research in leadership recruitment, assessment, and advisory services. I’ll be working at MU RI (https://lnkd.in/df7-8hS3) and, alongside my talented colleagues, will ensure the highest quality across all the professional assessment services the company offers. Of course, MU’s services are ISO10067 certified, and you can read more about that here: https://lnkd.in/det9Qfq5

What makes an effective Board in difficult times? At GUBERNA - Instituut voor Bestuurders/Institut des Administrateurs Directors Day last week in Brussels, Wout Van Impe, Partner & Team Director at MU, shared his valuable perspective on leadership and board governance in today’s complex environments. He emphasised the importance of rethinking traditional approaches, which often rely on generalisations and assumptions about effective leaders, board members, or CEOs. As Wout pointed out, this can lead to costly mistakes in leadership and board selection. No normative model can fully describe the characteristics of an effective Board or leadership. Wout underscored that Boards must tailor their decisions to the unique challenges and characteristics of their organizations. A one-size-fits-all leadership model simply doesn't work. Referencing Daniel Kahneman’s "Think Fast and Slow," Wout highlighted the need for balance. While some decisions—like leadership changes—require swift action, others demand more careful, methodical consideration. He posed an important question: How does your board navigate decision-making in the face of new or evolving information? Decisiveness and curiosity are vital, Wout emphasized. Boards cannot afford to manage based on hope—"Hope is postponed disappointment," as he put it. Instead, decisions must be based on facts, with board members remaining curious and open to continuous learning. Wout also noted the evolving role of the Chair, particularly in difficult times. Less about embodying the CEO role, the Chair's focus should be on enhancing the collective intelligence of the board, fostering agility, and maintaining a learner’s mindset. Without inclusive leadership from the Chair, diversity in a board loses its impact. Effective Boards are those that adapt, evolve, and contribute meaningfully to their organisations’ success. Wout advocates for moving beyond generic models and focusing on leadership decisions tailored to the specific needs and challenges of today’s complex environments. Additionally, he suggests that Boards review their performance and contribution to results in an objective and well-managed way. If you want to learn more about the Board & CEO services MU is offering, you find a link in the comments, and you can also connect directly with Wout Van Impe through LinkedIn or at Wout.VanImpe@mercuriurval.com

At MU, we know that the effectiveness of Boards and CEOs is crucial in driving both organisational results and employee success. The systemic impact these leaders have—both in the short and long term—cannot be understated. Yet, traditional Executive Search methods often fall short, with only 50-60% of CEO and executive appointments succeeding.   Our Board & CEO Practice is one of the fastest-growing areas at MU, and based on the opportunities that exist, that is not surprising. Through our science-based and context-driven approach, we help organisations secure the right leadership and ensure their continued effectiveness.   Last week the whole global practice team led by Mieke Weijenberg and Christian Schaffenberger, met outside Stockholm to continue looking forward into the future, where effective leadership will continue to be the foundation of success.   Several key insights stood out:   - The future of Board work is becoming increasingly complex and time-consuming, demanding even greater courage and expertise from Board Chairs and Board members. - Board evaluations should reflect the unique, ever-changing contexts of each organisation—there is no one-size-fits-all solution. - The role of the chair is critical; Ralf Siegl, professional Swiss Board Member, who joined the session as an external guest, stressed that the role of the chair is becoming increasingly important as future board work will be even more intense, complex and time-consuming for all members of the board. “We must be nosy, stay close, but keep our hands off”.   It was inspiring to collaborate with our international colleagues, sharing best practices, gaining new perspectives on board effectiveness, and refining our approaches to Board & CEO services. These exchanges ensure that we continue to lead with purpose and precision. MU has built a very solid team consisting of highly experienced Consultants for Board & CEO Searches as well as for Board Analysis globally. This allows MU to analyze and advise on the right board composition and to identify, attract and integrate the perfect match for all our clients.   Using MU Leader Selection Science®, we offer tested and proven solutions tailored to SMEs, family businesses, and mid-sized firms. Our goal is clear: help organisations outperform through better Board and CEO leadership.   Read more via the link in the comments! #BoardEffectiveness #ExecutiveSearch #LeadershipDevelopment #BoardLeadership #CEOLeadership
