📢 TSAS2025 Call for Papers is now open until 31 August 2024! 🔜The international conference ‘Towards Sustainable Aviation’ aims at bringing together all stakeholders of the aeronautical ecosystem to debate on both aircraft design and operations perspectives to continue shape a more efficient Global Air Transport System by 2050. The ultimate goal is to assess progress made at the previous edition. Nonetheless, other relevant topics such as #SAF, more electrical & autonomous aircraft, emerging technologies like #AI, and security seen as an opportunity for improvement, will be also discussed. Heat exchangers could improve the environmental impact of future hydrogen aircraft engines. In a recent paper by me and my great colleagues at Chalmers University of Technology and GKN Aerospace Sweden AB we showed how to design, optimize and integrate compact heat exchangers into turbofan engines. These heat exchangers are used for intercooling and waste heat recuperation, and lead to significant reductions in fuel consumption and NOx-emissions. Why is reduced fuel consumption important? Even for hydrogen - which doesn't emit CO2 when burned in an engine - there are advantages in reducing fuel consumption since this decreases the amount of resources and energy needed for its production in the first place. Why are reduced NOx-emissions important? NOx-emissions from aviation impact local air quality on the ground near airports, and therefore human health. The technology we present in our paper also has the potential to decrease NOx-emissions by almost 40% during takeoff.
