The Nordic countries' genebank and knowledge center for genetic resources

"It is stated in the recent #Nordic ministerial Kalmar II declaration on access and rights to genetic resources, that the Nordics support the International Plant Treaty's multilateral system and its benefit-sharing fund. In addition, I don't think we would have had the Svalbard Global Seed Vault today without the International Plant Treaty", said Lise Lykke Steffensen in the #COP16 #EU-pavillion at a side event arranged by FAO's International Plant Treaty.

🌍 Genetic resources are part of #biodiversity and essential for human life on earth. 🌍 🌱 But who owns them, and who can access them? And how could benefits derived from genetic resources be shared in an equal and just way? 🌱 🪷 This is one of the core issues discussed at #COP16Colombia right now. Learn more about the #Nordic approach in this short explainer. ⬇️ --- The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council I NordGen I International Plant Treaty I Jordbruksverket I Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus I Swedish Environmental Protection Agency I NMBU - Norwegian University of Life Sciences I NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research I Ympäristöministeriö - Miljöministeriet - Ministry of the Environment of Finland I Land og skógur / Land and Forest Iceland I

#Svalbard Global #Seed Vault has been an important contribution to the global #genebank community as the worlds' largest backup facility for #crop diversity. As we deposited seed copies from 7 new genebanks this week, the total number of depositors has now reached 123. 🎉 But what about those plants that for some reason can't be stored in the Seed Vault? The clones and recalcitrant seeds? 🍠 🥑 Interesting topic that will be discussed at #COP16Colombia in a few days ⬇️
Next week we will be discussing the importance of #cryopreservation in two very important forums, #COP16, Cali, Colombia, and #WFP, Des Moines, USA. It is well known the importance of #genebanks and safety copies. Many #genebanks are at risk due to different reasons as wars, extreme climatic events as floods and fire, lack of funds… due to that, the importance of safety copies has been proved. #Svalbard has played a huge role in safeguarding safety copies of orthodox seed crops over the past almost 17 years for more than a 100 #genebanks globally. But what about the #clonal and recalcitrant seed crops? Five of the 10 most important food crops are vegetatively propagated. #Cryopreservation gives the opportunity of safeguarding this diversity in very long-term and is the alternative for safety copying this treasure for our and future generations.

Yesterday, more than 30,000 #seed samples from 23 #genebanks were secured in Svalbard Global Seed Vault. This seed deposit highlights the important function of the Seed Vault as backup facility available for genebanks from all over the world – not least in times of crisis. The participating genebanks in this deposit are based here: #Phillipines #Mexico #India #Morocco #Taiwan #Ethiopia #Zambia #Peru, #Poland #Romania #Thailand #Palestine #Chad #Albania #Bangladesh #Suriname #PapuaNewGuinea #Bolivia #Mali #Nigeria & #CostaRica Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eNtSqRNU

The #COP16Colombia of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is currently taking place in #Cali, and NordGen staff are there to partake in discussions on how to halt the global loss of #biodiversity. One of the points raised by NordGen is that #genebanks are important instruments for the implementation of the recently adopted Global Biodiversity Framework.

Strong Nordic youth presence at the #COP16Colombia! 💪🏻🌱🌎
Meet our NYBN team at COP16! 🌱🦧✨️🌳 At UN Biodiversity (the UN Convention on Biological Diversity) 16th meeting of Conference of Parties (CBD COP16, for short) we will be part of the ongoing negotiations to tackle, halt and reverse the global biodiversity crisis! Alongside many meetings, side events and networking, our main focus will be: 🌱 Support our mother organisation Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) combined youth priorities for the negotiations going on at the CBD COP16 🌱 Advocate for strong and ambitious National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plans (NBSAPs) from all the Nordic countries, meaning concrete and meaninful implementation of solutions towards our part of the global biodiversity crisis 🌱 Show that through earlier work this year we, together with many other Nordic civil society organisations have a wonderful report showcasing how the Nordics could and should implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM GBF) efficiently and ambitous More on this in other posts. Please read about our delegates! 🌻🐢🦚🪲🦠

“In emergencies, genebanks and the collections they conserve are at risk. For example, the Ukraine genebank has a collection which is important for the entire world. Through a task force with NordGen, Crop Trust and FAO we managed to duplicate and move some of the collections to a safer part of the country. Following this, an emergency reserve for genebanks in crises has been established to support national and international genebanks that contribute the Treaty’s Multilateral System. Unfortunately, more and more genebanks are in need of support", says Álvaro De Toledo Chávarri, Deputy Director at International Plant Treaty at the #COP16Colombia side event on genebanks.

"One of our projects aims to reduce cattle methane emissions through breeding of forages", says Peter Wenzl at @Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT at the official #COP16Colombia side event on genebanks. "Another project has identified cassava accessions in our collection which have resistance against brown streak disease, "
