This week Nordregio had the pleasure of hosting the NFGS 2024 meeting. At this event, representatives from the different Nordic Statistics Institutes and Nordregio came together to discuss ongoing projects and initiatives, common challenges, and potential for stronger synergies between the countries. There were many fruitful discussions that hopefully will lead to strengthened cooperation and improved harmonization of geodata and statistics across the Nordics. Special thanks to Linus Rispling, his colleagues at Statistics Sweden and all the other organizers for putting together such an interesting program!

🌍 Diversity on the rise in the Nordics - how does it shape the Nordic societies? 📈 Over the past three decades, all Nordic countries have seen a surge in diversity, with high levels of immigration and low fertility rates driving demographic change. The shares of foreign-born populations have reached all-time highs across the Nordic countries. 🔹 🔸 🔹 🔹 🔹 One in five residents in Sweden and Iceland is foreign-born. The rest of the Nordics follow close behind with growing shares of foreign-born population. The trend of increasing diversity shows no signs of slowing down, so the Nordics are heading towards increasingly diverse populations in terms of ethnicity, race, language and culture. 🗺 What does the Nordic geography of diversity look like? What does increasing diversity mean for regions and municipalities across the Nordic Region? 💡 State of the Nordic Region 2024 takes stock of the latest population trends and outlines the geographic patterns of diversity and their implications. 👇 Check out highlights here and take a look at the full report for additional insights! 📚 Authors, data and maps (chapter 3): Timothy Heleniak Karina Berbert Anna Vasilevskaya #NordicRegion #Diversity #Migration #NordicTrends #Population

🌍✈️ Can electric aviation contribute to driving sustainability and regional development in the Nordic region? 7 September marks the International Day of Clean Air and Blue Skies, highlighting the importance of collaborating across borders, sectors, and silos to reduce air pollution. Together with Nordic Energy Research and University of Akureyri Research Centre we explore how electric aviation will shape Nordic regions, from infrastructure needs to environmental benefits, as we move toward a greener future. Electric planes can improve accessibility in remote areas, saving time and reducing emissions. However, the increased connectivity also brings challenges, such as population shifts and impacts on local economies.
