    Yesterday, I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Peter Filcek from Tesco and Jim Herbert from Patchworks to discuss the newly launched Tesco Marketplace at #commercefusion, an event hosted by Dark Matter Commerce at the Ministry of Sound. I find the concept of a Marketplace really interesting, and something I find many don't really understand. Range extension doesn't mean you are going to be competing with the likes of Amazon or eBay. It means you are extending the range of products you are offering your customers, to ensure you complete their journey, giving them the best experience without them needing to purchase elsewhere. Tesco have done this perfectly, offering a wide range of quality products that you can purchase alongside your grocery shop, whilst making the customer's journey to checkout seamless. Not only will you receive your products directly to your door, you'll also earn clubcard points. As mentioned on stage yesterday, we have recently launched a new FastStart offering, which enables retailers using e-commerce providers like Shopify, Adobe Commerce, Big Commerce etc... to get their range extension project live within days, with minimal upfront costs.     Establishing a successful product data model in Marketplaces! 🛍 A key distinction between traditional E-commerce, where products are owned or produced by the E-commerce entity, and a marketplace lies in the responsibility for providing product data. In a marketplace model, it's often the sellers themselves who are responsible for providing the platform with product information. Here's a breakdown of some crucial considerations for creating a sustainable and useful product data model: ▪ MECE Principle: Ensure your product data model is both Mutually Exclusive and Collectively Exhaustive. Simplify mapping with clear, distinct categories, avoiding overlaps or gaps. ▪ Durability: Prioritize longevity in your product data model to minimize disruptions. Invest time upfront to build a robust model, reducing the need for frequent revisions that affect both platform systems and sellers' operations. ▪ Categories vs Attributes: Find a good balance. Detailed categories provide clarity, but incorporating attributes like collar type, sleeve length, and fit boosts adaptability without overcomplicating the category structure. Choose attributes for efficient accommodation of evolving product features. Building a solid product data model is key for marketplace success. Planning well and sticking to these principles pays off in the long haul.
