What a fantastic event Sweden Canada Innovation Days 2024 was! I had the pleasure of finally meeting Erik Hagenrud and Lawrence Hooey from Swedish Mining Innovation, who introduced me to Daniel Pacurar from Boreal Orchards AB. Daniel is spearheading an intriguing project that we're excited to delve deeper into for the members of Rethink Mining. Their re:moss technology has the potential to accelerate the restoration of mine sites, offering significant benefits not only to Canada and Sweden but to the entire world! #Innovation #Mining #Sustainability

🏃♂️𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗦!📊 We are glad to announce that the monitoring station in the Svappavaara test site is now up and running! The LKAB team, with the guidance and assistance of Ignacio Zapico Alonso (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and Ricardo Carrillo (Umeå University), has successfully finished the installation of the flume monitoring station and the ISCO sampler at the geomorphic test site and the comparison site. The collection of data in the monitoring station started at the beginning of August, and our 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝟱 partners have been working on it since then. Topographic surveying is also being carried out in the test site to provide more data on the erosional evolution of the test site. The data gathered will be analyzed by Ricardo Carrillo during the winter of 2024, and we expect to have some promising results by the end of 2024 - the start of 2025! Sedimentation ponds have also been constructed by the LKAB team at the outlets of the flumes. The sedimentation ponds are crucial for the monitoring as they will provide real total sediment measurements, which will be used to assess the erosion data obtained from the topographic and station monitoring. We’re pleased to share early progress from our ongoing collaboration with re:moss, focused on the ecological restoration of post-mining landscapes. Moss priming have now succesfully been applied on the trial mine areas at Nunasvaara South and Niska, marking an important step in restoring these areas.🌱🏞️   In the coming months, the re:moss project will closely monitor the growth and development of the moss in the designated areas of the test site. While this is just the beginning, we are committed to advancing this important initiative.

✨ PERFECT TIMING FOR THE RE:MOSS PROJECT ✨ On June 17th, Boreal Orchards delivered their first batch of moss primer to Kiruna as part of the re:moss project. 🎯 That same day, the EU Council adopted the Nature Restoration Law (https://lnkd.in/eA7bW68N), the first comprehensive, continent-wide legislation of its kind. The law sets binding targets and obligations for EU member states to rehabilitate at least 20 percent of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. 🌲 We spoke with the "Moss Man," Daniel Pacurar, to discuss the timing, the new law, and the progress of this UBI-supported project. ❓ What does the Nature Restoration Law mean for Boreal Orchards from a business perspective? 📣"The timing couldn't have been better! Hopefully, it means more business for us, but more importantly, we have our nature restored. By accelerating ecological restoration, we not only support the Nature Restoration Law but also Europe’s future. We provide the foundation on which any restoration concept can be applied and accelerated". ❓ Why is moss important for nature restoration? 📣"Nature restoration isn't just about planting trees. Starting with trees is like building a house from the roof down. A strong foundation is essential, and ecosystems are no different. Restoring mosses is as vital as planting trees – if not more so. Have you ever seen a forest or any ecosystem without moss? Mosses and biocrust restoration should be integrated as a key element in any tree planting and restoration initiatives". ❓ What progress has been made in the re:moss project? 📣 "We delivered our first batch of moss primer in June, and our second delivery is set for August. We have been scaling up, and by the end of the year, we will have moss primer applied on 4 ha in different locations. Restoration is a slow process, but we expect to see the first signs of success before the end of this project. We’re also working on several other exciting projects, which we hope to share later this autumn". P.S. re:moss is a Technical Innovation Project led by Boreal Orchards AB in collaboration with six industry and academic partners.
