re:moss is a Nature & Ecosystem Restoration concept that is being evaluated at scale as a Technical Innovation Project for sustainable minerals and metals supply.
The project is carried out through the Strategic Innovation Program Swedish Mining Innovation, a joint venture by Vinnova, Formas and the Energy Agency.
The total budget is 2,836,41 SEK
The concept is built around using native mosses, which are an essential component in the process of ecosystem building and recovery, for the restoration of post-mining landscapes.
Specifically, we are evaluating in an industry-relevant environment the combination of using off-site cultivated native moss species applied by hydroseeding, with geomorphic design and current best practice revegetation methods for aiding and enhancing the ecological restoration process of post-mining landscapes.
These three components, large-scale moss cultivation, geomorphic design and best practice vegetation establishment, specifically address the impact mining operations have on topography, vegetation, and ecosystem. They are aligned and optimized to secure a faster restoration process, supporting the mining sector in this essential but challenging step.
By combining the proposed technologies and solutions, we want to bring a new dimension that is essential to successful ecological restoration but often overlooked, biocrust restoration.
Biocrust formation is an essential first step for ecosystem recovery, and the aim of this project is to accelerate the ecological restoration of post-mining landscapes by targeting specific components in the biocrust restoration - the mosses.
