Sahlgrenska Science Park was represented at today’s parliamentary seminar on The Future of Healthcare and Drug Financing, hosted by MP Christofer Bergenblock (C) and MP Jesper Skalberg Karlsson (M) in collaboration with Roche Sweden. A key discussion point during the panel debate was the challenge of financing treatments for rare diseases—so-called orphan drugs. Christofer Bergenblock (C) emphasized the stark regional disparities in access to these medicines and the need for a national perspective. Another critical debate focused on how uncertainty is often overemphasized when evaluating new therapies. This hesitation leads to reluctance in approving and funding advanced medicines, putting Sweden behind other countries in terms of available innovative treatments. To address this, we must look to successful strategies across Europe to accelerate the adoption of advanced therapies—especially as Sweden aspires to be a leading Life Science Nation. Minaz S., board member of the Foundation for Muscular Dystrophy Research, shared her deeply personal story. With her son diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, she highlighted that while over 100 clinical trials—including gene and stem cell therapies—are currently ongoing worldwide, very few are taking place in Sweden and non of them are suitable for her son. As a result, her family is relocating to the U.S. to access treatment through a clinical trial. Her story underlines the urgent need to attract more industry-led clinical trials to Sweden. A big thank you for an insightful lunch seminar and the valuable opportunity to meet with MP Christofer Bergenblock to discuss Sahlgrenska Science Park’s engagement in the EU project PRECISEU This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of precision medicine in Europe by connecting innovative ecosystems and facilitating the transfer of best practices across regions. Yesterday, Sahlgrenska Science Park had the pleasure of hosting a workshop as part of the EU-Horizon project, PRECISEU, in collaboration with Precision Medicine Center at Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhuset. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants of the workshop 'Challenges for Innovations in Personalised Medicine to Reach the Market and Patients' held yesterday at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The workshop was a collaboration between Sahlgrenska Science Park and Precision Medicine Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, within the framework of the EU-Horizon project, PRECISEU." Gwen Gilderson, Project Manager at Sahlgrenska Science Park The workshop brought together key stakeholders to discuss the obstacles slowing down the adoption of personalised medicine innovations. Some critical challenges identified included: - Limitations on sharing health data - Lack of infrastructure to support startups in precision medicine - Restricted access to precision diagnostics - Non-optimal conditions for company-initiated clinical studies and test beds As part of PRECISEU, this mapping of barriers is being conducted across ten European countries, forming the foundation for a European gap analysis. By connecting innovation systems and sharing best practices, PRECISEU aims to accelerate the implementation of precision medicine across Europe.
