  • Is Space Scania’s next business area? And will the Nöörds’ toy truck manage to independently navigate a test track? Scania Hack is an annual event where employees can experiment with new ideas, solve problems, and drive innovation during a two-day hackathon. The event is held in Södertälje, Sweden, with 50+ teams attending, but teams also join digitally from other parts of the world, and this year, China hosted its first Scania Hack in Rugau. This year’s theme for Scania Hack is: Dream it, Do it, Love it. "Looking back at Scania’s history, we have always been part of the next step in transport solutions. We would like to explore how Scania can transfer its existing knowledge, technology, and solutions to the space industry," says Evy Svensson, Enterprise Architect, in team ‘Scania in Space’ which is exploring the potential for a new business opportunity. While Evy’s team focuses on future business ideas, Peter Atterfjäll and Per Sundbäck, in the Nöörds team are refining their project from last year’s Scania Hack: a self-driving toy truck. "We are building on last year’s results to turn this toy truck into a flexible, modular, robust, and well-designed vehicle. It’s a great learning opportunity to understand the different challenges involved in building a truck”, says Peter Atterfjäll, Information Risk & Complience Officer. The main focus with Scania Hack is to encourage creativity and innovation. As a bonus awards will be given in five different categories: People’s Choice, Best Presentation/video, Most surprising idea, Best Team spirit, Elimination of waste.

“Being allowed to fail creates an environment where everyone is more willing to take on responsibilities.” Sinchana Kallesara divides her work at Scania between two roles: Developer and Scrum Master within Autonomous Vehicles. But she says that coping with two roles is not a problem. “Being able to combine being a Scrum Master with also being a Developer is great for my sense of perspective. I get to see both sides of our work, and it makes me better in both roles.” After gaining a bachelor's degree in information science, Sinchana started her career as a Developer in India, before moving to Sweden. “The Swedish work culture is something I really appreciate, where work-life balance and well-being of employees are priorities. In addition, I value the continuous dialogue about the next step of one’s career here at Scania. Being able to discuss your wants and needs openly to make that next career step possible is inspiring and a motivation to keep striving.” Sinchana has been working at Scania for just over two years. “My team have a lot of fun together," she says. "I’d say we have the opposite of blame culture, and we make sure to help each other. I’m convinced our team spirit is a key ingredient in our results.”

With a strong inner drive and curiosity about leadership, and how strategic initiatives and processes best can contribute to effective solutions, Sofia Simonsson, People and Culture Manager at the Chassis plant in Södertälje, has come to the right place. “For me, personal development, opportunities, and versatility in assignments and within the company mean the most.” Her job is filled with diverse tasks and ever-changing days, but no matter where in Scania’s processes we operate, people are always a central and decisive factor. “My background in soccer has shaped my ability to work in various contexts, to set goals and make them achievable by turning them into actionable steps. Elements that are all very present at Scania.” She highlights how she feels a strong passion for striving forward together, and that her eye for details is of great value: “I identify areas that impact multiple aspects of the result, and translate them into improvement areas.” But, most of all, what inspires Sofia the most are colleagues driven by sharing thoughts, ideas and creating together. Even though she enjoys being a part of an environment with high energy levels and where creativity is second nature, she believes that it’s essential to paus, reflect and assess both needs and benefits. “It helps me remain resilient and courageous through times of change.” #IWD25
