#Water scarcity is one of the most pressing global challenges. In the past two decades, the annual amount of available freshwater resources per person has decreased by 20%. #Agriculture sector is the most affected, where #WaterScarcity also threatens #FoodSecurity in regions relying on irrigation. Effective water management, international cooperation, inclusive governance, and nature-based solutions can help overcome these challenges. Read more: https://buff.ly/P8QSsjK #WorldWaterDay #WWD

We're very proud of the SIANI expert group Wild Foods in Asia, led by NTFP, and the work they do to raise awareness of the role forests play for Food Security. Happy International Forests Day!
🌱🌿Happy International Day of Forests! 🌳🌴 This #IDF2025, let’s recognize the power of Indigenous food systems in sustaining our health, reversing biodiversity loss, and battling the climate crisis. For generations, Indigenous Peoples and local communities across the globe have safeguarded deep knowledge of forests as a source of food, medicine, and and source of livelihood. But this wisdom is at risk of disappearing. Wild Foods in Asia, led by NTFP-EP Asia, is working to document, revitalize, and share these invaluable traditional crops and food traditions—because protecting forests means protecting our future. 🌏✨ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g5iNfy22 SIANI - Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative #ForestsAndFood #LinkingPeoplesandForests

🌳 To celebrate the #InternationalDayofForests we will look back at some of our past work related to this year's theme #Forests and #Foods! This (old but still partly relevant) policy brief from 2013 is based on a contribution by Focali and our partners SIANI to the FAO conference “Forests for Food Security and Nutrition” held at FAO in May 2013. The joint participation in the conference by the two networks via Maria Ölund and Matthew Fielding was one of the first activities in the still ongoing close partnership. That food-security and food-systems is deeply intertwined with the broader values of forests and trees in the landscape as #Agroforestry is today much more recognized but in governance and management silos and too narrow views on the role of forests still persists. Direct benefits to #foodsecurity are very important as the pandemic underlined where the forests for many local communities became “the local supermarket” and traditional use of #NTFPs was revitalized. Examples of this was shared in our joint webinar The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on forest communities and forest resource use: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eapJsZft Current geopolitical turbulence spotlights the need to develop diverse and resilient food-systems to not only depend on long value chains and in these conversations the role of forests and trees for food-security are important. Their broader importance in the landscapes for food-systems via indirect benefits as rainfall for agriculture and enhanced resilience to shocks as storms will also need more attention ahead with increasing impacts of climate change on food-systems. One of the recommendations in the brief is worth repeating: “discussions on food and forests needs to move beyond single understandings of forests when thinking about food security and start to focus on the complex but multiple benefits that forests provide and the opportunities for enhancing food production and resilience through focusing on forests. Single definitions and government ‘departmentalization’ risk hiding the complex interactions of forests within a landscape and distort the multiple benefits forests have for food security and ultimately for poverty alleviation” To do this there is a need to strengthen cross-sectoral approaches to enable landscape management for the benefits of food and nutrition security in which trees are an important resource. Connect with us in Focali - Forests, Climate & Livelihoods network and SIANI - Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative if you are interested to contribute to bridge knowledge, policy and action on #foodsystem #agriculutre #forest #trees #landscape #biodiversity #water and #livelihood issues! There are trade-offs and synergies, and thus a great need to collaborate more ahead! As we did last week with the SIANI and Focali annual meetings held back-to-back where these interlinkages were discussed! #ForestDay #Focali2025
