Industry and academia creating a more sustainable world together! 🌱 Great to learn that Mission 0 House, a collaboration between large Swedish companies and universities, has secured its first long-term research funding. Several companies, SSAB included, together with Knowledge Foundation KK-stiftelsen have jointly guaranteed nearly SEK 100 million for the next five years. The research collaboration, led by Polestar and Lindholmen Science Park, started as a pilot project in spring 2024. We are pleased to announce that Carl Orrling will join SSAB’s Group Executive Committee as EVP & Chief Technology Officer and Head of the Transformation Office, effective April 1. ✨ Carl has been a key contributor to SSAB for several years – he joined the company in 2003 – most recently serving as Head of the Transformation Office. In this role, he has played a vital role as we transform from our current blast furnace-based production system in Luleå, Sweden, to a new state-of-the-art steel plant. In his new position, Carl will continue to lead the Transformation Office while also contributing to the strategic direction of SSAB as a member of the Group Executive Committee. “Carl has an impressive track record, and I’m very pleased that he will now join our Group Executive Committee,” Johnny Sjöström, SSAB's President and CEO, states. Happy to share great news: together with Toyota Material Handling Europe, we have agreed on a fossil-free partnership and deliveries of SSAB Zero™ steel. 🤝 Toyota is the first material handling equipment manufacturer to use SSAB Zero™, and it will use the steel to produce the forks and frames for hand pallet trucks. SSAB Zero™ is made using recycled steel and fossil-free energy – which means virtually zero fossil carbon emissions from the SSAB production process. ♻️ “We’re happy to work with Toyota in producing the next generation of material handling equipment with a lower carbon footprint. Epiroc has introduced the use of SSAB Zero™ steel in a serial-produced loading bucket, making them one of the firsts in the industry to feature virtually emission-free steel in a commercial product. The result? A reduction of 15 tonnes of CO2e per bucket produced, compared with traditional steel – a proof of a partnership driving a real change in the mining industry. HYBRIT milestone news! It is technically possible to store fossil-free hydrogen gas for the production of fossil-free iron and steel at scale. 💡⚙️   That is according to the findings of our joint pilot program with LKAB and Vattenfall on fossil-free hydrogen gas production and storage.   “With these innovative technologies, we can build strong fossil-free value chains with the potential to drastically reduce the climate footprint of the iron and steel industry,” says Martin Pei, CTO at SSAB.   A report on the findings has been submitted to the Swedish Energy Agency.   Here are three key takeaways:   💎 We built a 100 m3 hydrogen storage facility with steel-lined rock cavern technology adjacent to the HYBRIT pilot plant in Luleå in northern Sweden. Since 2022, it has been in operation for 3,800 hours during which the safety, functionality and performance of the facility have been successfully demonstrated. 💎 The tests now completed show that the technology works to support a large-scale hydrogen user, and that savings of about 25-40 percent of the variable operating costs of hydrogen gas production could be reached. 💎 The facility has undergone accelerated mechanical testing equivalent to approximately 50 years of operation, showing that the technology is ready for industrialization.   Read more ➡️ https://rb.gy/kek6mu   #FossilFreeSteel #HYBRIT #Hydrogen #Steel

We’re excited to announce that SSAB and Italian crane manufacturer Fassi Gru have reached an agreement for future deliveries of steel produced with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions. 🤝 The deal includes steel made from both iron ore and recycled scrap, which will be used in Fassi’s hydraulic and truck-mounted cranes. By adding future deliveries of SSAB Fossil-free™ steel and SSAB Zero™, Fassi will be able to bring to market a new generation of cranes with a radically reduced CO2 footprint. 🌱🏗️ “We look forward to deepening our collaboration with Fassi by delivering premium high-strength steel produced with a significantly lower carbon footprint.
