As all eyes will soon be turned to #Belgrade for the Best Sommelier of Europe, Africa and Middle East 2024 Contest, Star Wine List's Serbia Ambassador, Vuk Vuletic, has curated a selection of wine bars and restaurants not to miss. Hotspots vary, from the old city centre and newly-built Belgrade Waterfront, where tourist concentration peaks (see Cveće Zla and Decanter wine bar), to urban, cosy Old Town neighbourhoods (Restaurant 27, Puter, Legat 1903, Tata Mata), and finishing with New Belgrade, which is a hotspot for business on every level, in almost every field, with headquarters of numerous Serbian and foreign companies (Pinot, Jerry, Magellan and Gig). Sommelier and consultant Taylor Parsons has curated nine new Red Stars for our guide to Los Angeles, helping us to relaunch our coverage of the American city. A former jazz musician, Taylor talks to us about the symbiosis of music and wine, his abhorrence of “vanity verticals,” and the effect Uber’s had on LA’s wine scene. “Wine bars have proliferated around the city and are filled nightly with the young and the hip, sharing bottle after bottle of the latest natural quaffers,” Taylor says. “Restaurants have invested more broadly in cellars and the professionals to staff them, giving rise to exponentially more ‘serious’ programs around the city. A biodynamic pioneer producing wines in the Kamptal, Austria, Fred Loimer is not afraid to raise eyebrows in his bid to express his wines’ origin. “Biodynamics is very much about respecting the place,” he says, “which includes no manipulation of the soil and only little intervention in the cellar. Nothing added, nothing taken.” Since 2011, the domain has focused on sparkling wines: “I always had an eye on the sparklers. I like to drink them!
