“If all Germans produce 5 pages with GPT-4o every day for a year, the equivalent energy of two nuclear power plants would be needed” - see https://lnkd.in/eKG58ptQ This was just a small excerpt from an amazingly engaging Stockholm AI event that took place on Tuesday 5 November and featured Pruna AI 🍇 co-founder and chief scientist Bertrand Charpentier. The event was focused on green AI 🍀, and the following are some of the key takeaways: 🔬 AI efficiency methods include pruning, quantization and distillation, and some of these can be applied during training as well as post-hoc. 📈 The choice or combination of efficiency techniques should be based on final goals - whether that is the size/footprint or the speed - and weighed against the model performance, i.e. a smaller model may actually be slower than the bigger model, but maybe that is fine if the memory budget needs to be satisfied (e.g. on-device) ✨ Each technique requires deep expertise on its own, but Pruna AI democratizes this with a single smash() function - backed by years of research by Bertrand and his team, with peer-reviewed papers in ICLR, NeurIPS and others. According to the World Economic Forum, training a model such as Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (or GPT-3) is estimated to use just under 1,300 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity. This is roughly equivalent to the annual power consumption of 130 homes in the US. Training the more advanced GPT-4, meanwhile, is estimated to have used 50 times more electricity. Overall, the computational power needed for sustaining AI’s growth is doubling roughly every 100 days. Pruna AI is on a mission to make the AI smaller, greener and more efficient! Pruna’s co-founder, president, and chief scientist, Bertrand Charpentier, will travel from Germany to Stockholm and give us an amazing presentation on the cost of deep learning models, the common family of compression methods, and the main decision factors when applying them to real-life use cases. Last night we had an absolutely amazing event on "Knowledge Graphs in the Era of GenAI". More than 100 people attended the summit at EQT Group's beautiful offices in Stockholm, and listened to EQT / Motherbrain together with The Nobel Prize Outreach on three different KG based projects! We covered everything from research to very practical applications. The key takeaways are as follows: * KGs are old, but still a very exotic method of representing and traversing data * Depending on your data and precision requirements, they may or may not be a suitable choice * Even if the use case seems like a "slam dunk" on the paper, the KG implementation may not justify the effort - the only way to know for sure is to try on small scale, and evaluate carefully! That's right...it's time for our........"Knowledge Graphs in the era of GenAI" summit! 🕸️🕸️🕸️ In this event, we will explore three (!!!) different projects showcasing the good, the bad, the awesome, and the ugly of applying knowledge graphs (KGs) to real world problems. 👯 First up, we have CompanyKG - the culmination of research effort at EQT Motherbrain, where the team built a large-scale heterogeneous graph - developed for fine-grained company similarity quantification and relationship prediction. CompanyKG comprises 1.17 million companies represented as graph nodes, enriched with company description embeddings, and 51.06 million weighted edges denoting 15 distinct inter-company relations. Leveraging Nobel Prize laureate’s biographies and Nobel Prize lectures, the project used OpenAI's GPT-4 to extract meaningful keywords, and detect and merge synonyms using a simple but novel methodology, before finally merging the resulting keywords with a subgraph extracted from Wikidata. Valentin Buchner Hans Mehlin 💸 The final presentation will focus on the work conducted at EQT Motherbrain to generate a KG for private equity (PE) using a combination of GPT-4 and Neo4j. The resulting KG was trialled across a number of different tasks, including finding similar PE deals.
