🍎 Summing up #ClimateWeekNYC 2024 is no easy task—this year’s event was bigger than ever, with around 900 official side events! Our experts participated as speakers, panellists, and delegates at over 20 partner events throughout the week. The topics covered were diverse—energy, industry, nature, policy, sustainable living, and transport—but all focused on the urgent need for climate action. Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) hosted two key events, including one with the GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association, addressing the global challenges to accelerating a just industry transition. Here are some key takeaways from our own and other events, thanks to insights from Per Andersson, Nadia Mondini, and Robert Watt: ✅ Increasing engagement and activity around industry decarbonization through new projects and initiatives. ✅ Broad consensus that solutions for a green industry transition exist and must be scaled in a just way. ✅ A major challenge is mobilizing demand for green materials to unlock final investment decisions for decarbonization projects. ✅ Trade and common but differentiated responsibilities need more engagement and inclusiveness. ✅ More focus is needed on how to mobilize investments in decarbonization projects from both commercial financiers and public/multilateral sources. ✅ Global renewable energy capacity is lagging behind what’s required for industry transition at the necessary pace. Panelists at last week's seminar, Governing Critical Raw Materials and the Energy Transition, agreed that the energy transition seems to be moving faster than the governance frameworks for the critical raw materials essential to it. Key takeaways from Susan Park, University of Sydney; Weinthal Erika, Duke University; Hyeyoon Park, University of Stirling; Scott Odell, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rasmus Klocker Larsen, SEI, include: ❌ Lack of regulation: Most regulatory measures are voluntary, allowing corporations to choose what they are held accountable for. Fragmentation in governance tools is also an issue—for instance, it's unclear how the European Critical Raw Materials Act aligns with directives like the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence. ❌ Gaps in water governance and Indigenous rights: In Sweden, Sámi concerns are often disregarded in green transition projects. Negotiated agreements with developers are becoming a key governance tool but often lead to negative impacts on local communities. ✔️ Sustainable mining requires community engagement: Meaningful relationships with local communities and addressing concerns holistically, rather than just responding to influential voices, are essential for sustainable mining practices. ✔️ Rethink energy systems: The green transition presents an opportunity to not only make mining more sustainable but also rethink our energy systems, adopt circular economy practices, and reduce overall energy demand. cc Stockholm University #CriticalMinerals #GreenTransition #IndigenousRights

🤔 How can we make the invisible, visible? This question drove our discussions at the 2024 UK Clean Air Conference, where scientists, decision-makers, and civil society gathered to tackle the UK's air pollution challenges. Emerging evidence highlights its growing impact on health, making it crucial to learn from the latest science. Director of our York Centre, Sarah West shared insights from the SAMHE project on school air quality and co-designing interventions in homes via the INGENIOUS project. Her key takeaways: Collaborate with the public, researchers, and decision-makers throughout projects. 🤝 Engage local voices and ambassadors. 🗣️ Understand lived experiences for real-world solutions. 🏠 Co-develop outreach and educational materials for shared learning. 📚 Find out more: https://buff.ly/4e7P4da #CleanAir #UKCleanAirConference #SAMHE #INGENIOUS

Great turnout at our Goals House roundtable during #ClimateWeekNYC with a range of stakeholders from across business, academia and philanthropy discussing the intersection between climate & health for businesses and the impact on commercial activities & strategies. The big question deliberated was how can we better communicate the gains and benefits made from reducing #AirPollution, including: 👉 how businesses can become more resilient if their value chains start to incorporate climate action and air pollution into their transition plans 👉 how governments can influence air pollution reductions through integrating it into their national determined contributions next year 👉 how the right tools need to be combined into sustainability reporting, such as our guide for businesses on air pollution reporting developed by the SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute, Climate & Clean Air Coalition and Inter IKEA Group. 👉 how regulators have a role to play in implementing legislation for companies to start reporting on air pollution and help level the playing field for businesses 👉 how businesses have a role in informing their stakeholders, including consumers, clients and shareholders, on what they are due to gain, rather than lose, from reducing air pollution Thank you Goals House for bringing together such esteemed guests to continue dialogue around action on air pollution. #ClimateChange #AirQuality #ESG Roshni Mehta Sean Maguire Jane Burston
