On this World Clean AirDay, we turn our focus to Africa, highlighting the powerful link between air pollution, climate change, and human health. 🌍💨 Recent research from the Integrated Assessment of Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa shows that improving air quality can significantly benefit health, combat desertification, and enhance food security across the continent. New insights from the Climate & Clean Air Coalition Africa Clean Air Program Project, co-led by SEI’s Kevin Hicks and Philip Osano, emphasize the urgent need to address human-induced drivers of sand and dust storms, including land degradation and water use practices, which contribute to both climate change and air pollution. Key focus areas of the brief include: 🌧️ Precipitation and temperature benefits 🏜️ Land degradation, drought, and desertification 🌾 Crop yields These efforts are essential in supporting African nations to meet the development goals set out in the African Union's Agenda 2063 – The Africa We Want. In celebration of World Clean Air Day, we’re excited to share this video highlighting our latest work on creating sustainable, low-emission cities through the UK PACT programme! 🌏 Collaboration is key to achieving this goal. Together with Clean Air Asia, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), and local Indonesian stakeholders, we’ve developed the Road Transport Decarbonisation Pathway (RTDP) tool to shape Indonesia’s low-emission transport future. 🇮🇩 The RTDP tool supports policymakers in designing effective, inclusive, and sustainable transport solutions by focusing not only on reducing transport emissions but also exploring co-benefits like air quality improvements and public health impacts. In August, we trialled the tool with over 50 key stakeholders in Jakarta, including policymakers and urban planners. “The feedback we gathered is instrumental in fine-tuning the tool before its official release. This collaborative process ensures that the RTDP tool is effective and aligns with the specific needs of Indonesia’s diverse regions,” said Gary Haq, PhD, Senior Research Associate at SEI’s centre at the University of York. Find out how the RTDP tool helps drive low-emission mobility—watch our animation now 👇👇 https://buff.ly/4dQdYhI #WorldCleanAirDay #CleanAirNow #SustainableTransport #ClimateAction #Indonesia

🛣️ 🇮🇩 We’re excited to share progress on our Road Transport Decarbonisation Pathway (RTDP) tool, a key innovation in reducing transport emissions and air pollution in Indonesia. This initiative comes as we prepare to mark World Clean Air Day, underscoring the importance of clean air for a sustainable future. Developed with our partners Clean Air Asia and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) under the UK PACT programme, the RTDP tool was recently tested in a workshop with over 50 key stakeholders. It empowers policymakers and urban planners to model decarbonisation pathways for the transport sector, taking into account emissions reductions and co-benefits like public health. “These efforts aim not only to achieve Indonesia’s climate targets but also help us develop economic and social co-benefits, ultimately improving the health of urban communities,” said Harriet Cooney, Deputy Head of Low Carbon Infrastructure, UK in Indonesia - UK in Indonesia - British Embassy Jakarta. As we approach International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, it's crucial to address both the challenges and solutions for achieving cleaner air. Air pollution, a leading cause of premature deaths and a driver of climate change, makes clean air more critical than ever. Immediate investments in clean air are essential for protecting both people and the planet. We recently spoke with our York centre researcher Chris Malley about the links between air pollution, climate change, and public health. Key Takeaways: • Systemic Changes: Addressing pollution at its root, especially in low- and middle-income countries with high pollution levels. • Affordable Cleaner Fuels: Increasing access to clean energy to reduce reliance on wood, biomass, and fossil fuels. • Multiple Benefits: Clean air actions also promote 🚶♂️walking, 🚴♀️ cycling, and efficient public transport, reducing emissions and improving health through physical activity.
