Last week, we were visited by new students from Luleå University of Technology (LTU). It was their first week in the program, and we, along with Talga Group, talked about our respective companies, what it's like to work as a civil engineer in our fields, and gave tours of the pilot halls. Guided by Swerim AB were Ida Heinz, Johan Stenman, Pontus Darth, and from Talga, Jakob Kero Andertun participated. #research #students

It was a truly enriching experience to participate in the 24th European Conference on Fracture 2024 – #ECF24 – in Zagreb last week, where, along with our industrial partners, we presented six papers within the Thematic Symposia on Hydrogen Embrittlement in Metallic Materials: pipeline, transport, hydrogen storage, and other applications. Industrial PhD students at Swerim, Eduard Navalles and Robert Sundström from Luleå tekniska universitet and Högskolan Väst, showed their work on embrittlement of pipeline steels and testing methods in gaseous hydrogen. Adam Ståhlkrantz presented a bilateral project on the effects of hydrogen on plasticity in high strength steels. From the #HyMech II project, Frans Palmert from Siemens Energy and Johan Pilhagen from Outokumpu presented the effects of hydrogen on nickel-base alloys and stainless steels. Finally, the ESIS Technical Committee TC21 Hydrogen Embrittlement and Transport symposium co-chair and senior embrittlement researcher Birhan Sefer held a talk on how hydrogen gas can affect exhaust and engine metallic materials at elevated temperatures. The success of the TC21 symposium: Hydrogen embrittlement and transport was recognized with more than 100 contributions with the excellent cutting-edge research presentations/posters from worldwide researchers. ECF 24 acknowledged the success of the TC21 symposium with the Gold Symposium Award. We thank our industrial partners (Siemens Energy, Outokumpu Stainless, SSAB, Scania Group, Volvo Group) for their work in the projects and the organizers of TC21 (chairs Milos Djukic, Frank Chang, Tom Depover, co-chairs Motomichi Koyama, Livia Cupertino Malheiros, Masoud Moshtaghi and Birhan Sefer) for a great conference. See you next time!” #hydrogen #hydrogenembrittlement #metallicmaterials #research

Allow us to introduce Felix Öhman, our newest industrial PhD candidate, starting this autumn. Felix comes from a background in Material Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where he also completed his thesis at Swerim this spring. His work investigated the potential for internal recycling of electric arc furnace slag from steel production. Felix is now excited to further his research on sustainable slag practices, contributing to the transformative changes in the steel industry! #industrialphd #research #sustainableslag #steel #phdstudent

We are delighted to announce that Moa Bertling has joined the Swerim team! At Swerim, Moa will primarily focus on heat treatment processes. She studied Engineering in Materials Science at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, specializing in Industrial Materials. Moa recently completed her master thesis at Swerim, where she conducted research on moisture mitigation and storage condtions within the powder metallurgy industry. We are thrilled that she has decided to stay with us. Welcome aboard, Moa! #heattreatment #newjobb #research #welcome

Insightful Visit from the Center of Excellence – Trees For Me We had the pleasure of hosting over 20 researchers from Luleå tekniska universitet (LTU), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå universitet, Skogforsk and Stora Enso at Swerim. Their interest was keen on understanding the role of biomass in transitioning the steel and metals industries. Ida Heintz and Chuan Wang did an exceptional job presenting our research on CO2 reduction, with a special focus on biomass. The visit concluded with a tour of our pilot halls, showcasing the practical applications of our studies. A day full of engaging discussions and shared learning – looking forward to further collaborations! #co2reduction #research #biomass
