Thanks to the recent acquisition of an SLM®280 2.0 from Nikon SLM Solutions, Swerim can now offer complete, in-house solutions across the entire metal powder value chain. “The printer enables us to work with development along the entire metal powder value chain for our industrial customers,” said Annika Strondl, Swerim. “From powder manufacturing, characterization, and consolidation to post-processing and final application.” Comparisons can be made between additive manufacturing with laser and electron beam, and near-net-shape hot isostatic pressing of powder. If you would like to know more about our new equipment, please contact Tatiana Fedina, Swerim. #additivemanufacturing #metalpowder #research

Last week, our senior researcher, Dr. Elsayed Mousa, represented Swerim at the EUROSLAG 2024 conference in Bilbao. He delivered a compelling presentation alongside Mr. Mats Åhlin from Cemvision, focusing on the valorization of steel slag for sustainable cement production. Their insights highlighted innovative approaches to utilizing steel slag, contributing to a more sustainable future in construction. In a noteworthy announcement, Christer Ryman from Jernkontoret revealed that the next EUROSLAG conference will be hosted in Luleå, organized by Swerim AB, Luleå University of Technology, and Jernkontoret. This upcoming event promises to foster further collaboration and knowledge sharing within the industry. In the accompanying photo, from left to right: Hedvig Axberg (CemVision), Elsayed Mousa (Swerim), and Mats Åhlin (CemVision). Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to lead the charge in sustainable practices within the steel and cement industries! The annual Swerim Day, hosted by our CEO Pontus Sjöberg, was a resounding success, bringing together over 100 participants from industry, academia, and funding bodies. This year's discussions focused on the pivotal role of research during this era of industrial transformation. First up were Maria Swartling, Swedish Metals & Minerals, and Mats Lundin, Net Zero Industry - Impact innovation, who discussed challenges and opportunities within Sweden's new innovation initiative for the 2030s – Impact Innovation. Ingegerd Annergren from Scania Group shared insights into navigating towards sustainable transport through collaborative research, while Tom Eriksson of Alleima, shared insights on their strategic R&D collaborations. Monika Adsten from Vattenfall highlighted the essential role of nuclear power in Sweden's fossil-free future. The day also showcased the FINAST project, emphasizing advanced green steel production and manufacturing in Norrbotten, supported by EU fund for justice transition and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. Moreover, discussions on the industry's electrification, particularly in aluminum joining, were led by Therese Källgren of Scania Group and Pia Borg from Swerim. Annelie Papadopoulos, Vargön Alloys AB concluded with an overview of the Bio4SAF project, recently awarded for its sustainable solutions in the FeCr industry. Attached are some pictures from the day.

Swerim started with laser ultrasonics (LUS) research more than 25 years ago. Thanks to the longstanding support from the Swedish steel industry, the funding by the Swedish state through Vinnova, and by the #EU this LUS based technology was finally realized 2 years ago. The device is still delivering unique in-situ measurements that enables novel feed-back and feed-forward process-control in the Hot Strip Mill. The paper: ”Laser-Ultrasound-Based Grain Size Gauge for the Hot Strip Mill” describes what is needed for the real-time, in-line, and non-destructive grain size gauge. Authors: Micke Malmström, Anton Jansson, Bevis Hutchinson, Johan Lönnqvist. Lars Gillgren, Linda Bäcke, Hans Sollander, Matthias Bärwald, Sascha Hochhard and Peter Lundin Happy reading! #hotstripmill #grainsizegauge #metalprocessing #research #laserultrasonics Happy reading!

This week Swerim and SSAB performed some very interesting measurements with grain size gauge developed by Swerim and built by EMG Automation GmbH. The laser ultrasound-based gauge measures the through thickness average grain size along the whole length of the strip non-destructively! ”It’s like peering into a new world, enabled by the grain size gauge delivering this real-time microstructure data during the hot rolling process. It has the potential to improve the rolling stability and process control and accelerate the material development” says Micke Malmström, Swerim, one of the creators of the device. The attached video shows one such measurement, the gauge is placed after the last stand looking up on the strip from underneath and measures the austenite grain size. (This video is from a previous campaign, it’s an excerpt from the “Applied Sciences Webinar | Application of Laser-Ultrasonics in Metal Processing”). For more information contact Micke Malmström. #grainsize #gauge #laserultrasound #microstructure #research #hotrollingprocess

Another successful GLUS (Geeble + laser ultrasound) campaign just finished at Swerim in Stockholm. This time both annealing GLUS-tests (up to 30 minutes) as well as stress-relaxation GLUS-tests were performed. The video shows one stress-relaxation GLUS measurement on stainless steel 316L during a 60 % deformation at a strain rate of 0.05 s-1. The graph displays the corresponding real-time measured grain size from the GLUS test at 1150 °C together with an additional GLUS test at 950 °C for comparison. The experiment at 1150 °C (yellow triangles) displays dynamic recrystallization i.e., the microstructure starts to recrystallize during the deformation. For the experiment at 950 °C (red circles) the temperature is not high enough for the recrystallization to start during the hit, hence, the grain size remains constant during the whole deformation. The GLUS measurements provide the real-time microstructural evolution of your material during annealing and or thermomechanical processing. It is even possible to simulate the whole finishing mill process with up to 6 hits with varying deformation and inter-pass time in one single GLUS-test. We perform these measurements upon request at Swerim, and if you would like to characterize your materials with GLUS then please contact Micke Malmström, Swerim
