PostDoc Position in Alpine Plant /Soil Biota Ecology The Physiological Plant Ecology (PPE) group of the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel, Switzerland is looking for a Postdoc (85%) in Alpine Plant Ecology (supervised by Dr. Erika Hiltbrunner). Your assignments The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and aims at capitalizing on a long-term experiment in an alpine grassland in the Swiss Alps, studying species-specific responses to recurrent snow manipulations and summer drought by investigating the soil microbiome and root symbionts of the alpine plant species. The field work will be conducted at a unique research site in the Swiss central Alps with seasonal stays at the Alpine Research and Education Station Furka (www.alpfor.ch). Soil microbiome analysis will be performed in a specialized lab. Your profile We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D in biology, ecological genetics, environmental sciences or a related discipline. Good skills in R statistics are required and experiences in handling big data sets are of advantage. The candidate should be willing to work under sometimes harsh alpine field conditions. Teamwork within the group and associated partners requires good spoken and written English and (favourably) some German language skills. PhD scholarship within comparative evolutionary genomics The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has one vacant 3-year PhD–position within comparative evolutionary genomics, with the possibility of extension for up to one year. Whole genome duplication (WGD) has played a central role in the evolution of vertebrates, creating opportunities for evolutionary innovations. Our research has shown that WGD spark strong selection pressure on the function and regulation of many genes and pathways. However, the precise mechanisms underlying these gene regulatory adaptations remain largely unknown.  In the Norwegian Research Council-funded project, ThreeD, we will use salmonid fish as a model to explore the emerging hypothesis that selection on 3D genome organization drives gene regulatory evolution following WGD. https://lnkd.in/dNUMpX8k

Postdoctoral fellow within AI-Based Analysis of Hyperspectral Images of Tree Rings The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant three-year post-doctoral position related to the extraction of climate proxy information from hyperspectral images (HSI) of tree rings using artificial intelligence (deep learning). The candidate to be hired will join our innovative project, titled “Novel Approach to Dendroclimatology Using Hyperspectral Imaging and Deep Learning”. The project is funded by the Human Frontier Science Program. The project aims to apply cutting-edge analytical technologies to dendroclimatology, with a specific focus on tropical tree species.  Dendroclimatology, the study of tree rings to extract past climate proxy data, is key to climate research, especially in temperate and boreal regions with clear seasonal patterns. However, in tropical areas, tree ring formation is more complex due to less defined seasons and climate variability. Consequently, climate records from tropical regions, especially in Africa, are scarce, highlighting the need for improved technologies to analyze tree rings and advance the continent’s climate science. In this project, we aim to pioneer a novel method in dendroclimatology by combining Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) and Deep Learning (DL) for detecting, characterizing and consequently extracting climate proxy information from tree rings.
