White Arkitekter secures Svenska institutet grant to support sustainable rebuilding of Ukraine. White Arkitekter has received project funding by the Swedish Institute through the SI Ukraine Cooperation Programme for the key initiative SustainTimber: Standards for Sustainable Transition. The project aims to develop sustainable timber architecture in Ukraine while aligning the country’s rebuilding efforts with European regulations and integration goals. As part of Ukraine’s National Recovery Plan, which emphasizes green technologies and sustainable development, this project will harness the potential of timber construction to rebuild modern, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible infrastructure. We will manage the project in collaboration with our Ukrainian partner, studio zmist – a leading architecture firm in Lviv specialised in sustainable urban planning. –We are proud to play a leading role in this significant project that blends sustainable architecture with an urgent humanitarian mission. This partnership with Studio Zmist enables us to combine our expertise in timber architecture and social sustainability with local Ukrainian insights, ultimately contributing to the creation of resilient, modern, and environmentally responsible cities, says Carl Bäckstrand, Deputy CEO and International Director at White Arkitekter. Yesterday, we were also invited to a seminar organized by the Government Offices, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the Swedish Institute on building sustainable partnerships to support Ukraine. Emma Shepherdson, represented White Arkitekter, and together with a distinguished panel convened to discuss the crucial themes of resilience, EU integration, and sustainable growth for Ukraine and highlighting SustainTimber as a testament to the strength of Swedish-Ukrainian partnerships. Lumi – one of Swedens most ambitious reuse projects officially inaugurated. ♻️ Yesterday saw the inauguration of Lumi in Uppsala, one of Sweden’s most ambitious reuse projects and a test bed for new solutions for large-scale circular architecture. In a unique project, the concrete structure of a 1970s house has been rebuilt and re-clad, while everything that is practically feasible has been reused, such as gypsum boards, bricks, doors, radiators and electrical boxes. The result is a modern lab and office building with a very low climate impact, designed by White Arkitekter on behalf of Vasakronan. When the Swedish Food Agency moved out of its customised premises in the 1970s Hugin complex in central Uppsala, the consensus was that it could not be adapted for new tenants and needed to be demolished. But by thinking outside the box, it was possible to show how the premises could be modernised, saving large parts of the structure and adding three new floors in wood. Reusing a concrete structure in this way and on this scale is unique. Thanks to its extensive reuse, Lumi has about half the CO2 impact of an equivalent new wooden house. Add to that the savings made by avoiding demolition and the difference is even greater. The high level of reuse has already attracted national and international attention during construction. – In Lumi, we have shown that it is possible to create beautiful and thoughtful architecture with recycled materials and attractive spaces that meet modern requirements despite the limitations of the existing structure, says Anders Tväråna, lead architect at White Arkitekter. We're proud to share that Stockholm Wood City is officially underway. Leading the way is Kvarter 7 (Residential Block 7) atop Nobelberget in Sickla, designed by us on behalf of Atrium Ljungberg, which is the driving force behind the unique project. Kvarter 7 comprises 80 apartments across three buildings, all featuring solid wood frames and façades. Our design takes inspiration from early timber buildings, creating a distinctive character while fostering a human-centered and sustainable living environment. A child-centered perspective has been a guiding principle throughout, ensuring practical features and safe play areas for families. Kvarter 7 marks the starting point of the world’s largest urban wooden construction project, and we’re excited to contribute our expertise in wood architecture to shape the future of sustainable urban development. Newly Renovated Office for Higab AB – with 93% reused interior. Higab's office premises at Åvägen 17 in Gothenburg have now been fully renovated. This interdisciplinary interior design project, which placed sustainability and circularity at the forefront, saw the creation of an interior design inspired by the city's historic buildings. From the outset, both Higab and White Arkitekter had high ambitions for reuse, aiming to achieve as much recycled content as possible and minimise new construction. By the project's completion, 93% of the office’s interior was reused, resulting in a savings of 44 tonnes of CO2. When Higab planned the renovation and adaptation of its offices in 2023, White Arkitekter was brought in to provide a range of expertise, including interior design, architecture, lighting design, construction management, and accessibility. The aim was to create a sustainable environment that better supports the company's needs and workflow, with more flexible open areas for collaboration and smaller spaces for individual work and discussion. Higab owns and manages some of Gothenburg's most iconic and important architectural heritage. This was a key inspiration in shaping the office interiors, with design elements drawn from five of Higab's renowned buildings: Åvägen 17, Feskekôrka, Gathenhielmska huset, Dicksonska palatset, and Slakthuset. Higab’s office has also been nominated for the 2024 “Sveriges Snyggaste Kontor 2024 –Sweden’s Most Attractive Office” competition, organised by Lokalnytt.se, Fastighetssverige, and Nordic Property News, with the winner to be announced on November 13th. Grevhagsskolan’s new sports hall, along with its accompanying classrooms, is a valuable addition to the entire Eksjö community and is shared by both the school and local clubs. Embracing the wooden town's heritage, the hall is in line with both the municipality’s sustainability goals and its building traditions. The building features a central entrance hall with a staircase and tiered seating, providing a convenient meeting place for classes or sports teams before and after games and training, both inside the sports hall and outdoors. Treating the building with traditional Swedish “slamfärg” paint was a given to connect with Eksjö’s long-standing tradition of using this material. Since the hall’s character and its surroundings, including a classic 1960s pavilion school, are situated at some distance from the red timber facades of the old town, it was not appropriate to imitate them literally. Instead of the traditional red color, an oxidized green shade of “slamfärg” was chosen, which also ties in with the school’s leafy surroundings by the Eksjö River. The school is nominated for the swedish award Rödfärgspriset. – We are incredibly proud that together with Eksjö Kommunfastigheter we have been able to realise our shared vision of a sustainable and welcoming building, says Pia Eckerstein, lead architect. The sports hall has full-size dimensions and a permanent grandstand with seating for about 150 spectators, making it suitable for match play as well. The hall is lively for much of the day, playing an important role for many children and young people, strengthening the sense of community in Eksjö. Bølgen Bath & Leisure Centre is a significant investment in the health and well-being of the people of Frogn kommune. This modern aquatic and sports centre serves the entire community, providing a welcoming space for professional athletes, amateurs and recreational users alike. By encouraging physical activity and social interaction, Bølgen not only strengthens community ties, but also promotes a healthy and active lifestyle for everyone in the district. Completed in 2019, Bølgen Bath & Leisure Centre was conceived as a swimming and fitness centre for the entire family. It offers spaces for exercise, leisure, education, and therapy, with each activity catered to individually while functioning as part of a cohesive wellbeing hub. The layout is designed to encourage social interaction and allow easy navigation between activities, creating an area-efficient yet experience-rich environment. Built on a forested slope overlooking the fjord, Bølgen Bath & Leisure Centre is located near the town centre, Drøbak School, and Seiersten Youth School. This proximity allows for shared functions and activity programmes with nearby facilities like Frognhallen and Seiersten Stadium. Rather than a conventional static structure, the centre is designed across different levels, each offering unique lighting, appearance, acoustics, and atmospheres, allowing for distinct separation between areas when needed. Low-maintenance and environmentally conscious materials have been chosen to enhance the visitor experience and support public health. The centre features a main swimming pool with diving boards ranging from 1.3 to 5 metres, alongside pools dedicated to training, therapy, and children’s activities. The building also houses a spa, changing rooms, a cafeteria, kitchen, shop, and a technical basement. Additionally, a commercial fitness centre and office space occupy the levels above the pool, generating extra revenue for the municipality. Today is Allemansrättens dag in Sweden! A special day to highlight and celebrate the freedom and responsibility that this right entails. The Right of Public Access, or 'Allemansrätten' as we call it, provides unique accessibility to Swedish nature. You have the right of public access whenever you visit Swedish nature - whether you're going for a walk, kayaking, picking berries, climbing a mountain or simply enjoying nature. We turn to the forests and meadows for adventure, for comfort, healing and solace, and we trust nature to replenish our energy. Adding buildings to our precious natural environment requires the utmost respect and attentiveness, but also the confidence to design spaces that celebrate the natural environment and benefit all living things. We call it architecture with nature as the client. The Day of the Right of Public Access was founded in 2022 by Svenskt Friluftsliv and Generation Pep, and it's a day we are proud to celebrate. Today we’re highlighting some of our projects in Swedens diverse wilderness: 1. Hamra National Park | Photo: Tomas Ärlemo 2. Tiveden National Park | Photo: White Arkitekter 3. Since its opening in 1835, Southend Pier has been the pride of the town, attracting visitors from all over the UK. However, this once vibrant seaside resort gradually fell into decline. The pier has now been transformed into a carbon-neutral social space, revitalising the tourist economy and restoring the civic heart of Southend-on-Sea. In response to an international design competition, the winning entry, 'Sculpted by Wind and Wave', envisioned the pier as a vibrant urban thoroughfare. Beginning as an extension of the main street, this public promenade leads to the head of the pier, where the Royal Pavilion - a cultural and visitor centre powered entirely by renewable energy, including wind power and seawater heat pumps - stands proudly. Completed in 2012, this contemporary attraction with strong environmental credentials has restored civic pride to the city for over a decade. The Royal Pavilion's modern design is a bold departure from Southend's traditional architecture. Its form, in harmony with the windswept landscape, has once again made the pier a focal point for the town's cultural life. The design was developed and delivered in collaboration with London-based SPRUNT SOLUTIONS and Price & Myers.
