Travelling by train is cheaper in the north - more expensive in the south. According to a new report from #KTH. Each year, researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology produce a report analysing the supply and prices of passenger rail transport. This year's analysis includes data from over eighty rail routes. "We examined the average cost of booking a journey seven days in advance," says Oskar Fröidh, head of the Railway Group at KTH, who is interviewed by Dagens Nyheter. Would you like to increase your knowledge of spatial data analysis techniques? Apply for the Spatial Data Analysis in Practice (SDAP) doctoral course! Spatial statistics is a rapidly developing field that has greatly impacted the environmental disciplines and the socio-economic sciences—human geography, economics, spatial planning, and criminology, among others. SDAP 2025 (March- May) is an interdisciplinary course that combines lectures and hands-on labs. Students examine traditional analytical methods and gain an introduction to machine learning techniques tailored for spatial analysis. Any #doctoralstudent and researcher from relevant subject areas (e.g., Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Real Estate, Geography, Demography, Criminology, and Environmental Sciences) can take this course. Learn more about the course: https://lnkd.in/dm34gh_A and register soon: https://lnkd.in/dMTMFYbD - the course starts in March! For more information, please contact Vania Ceccato or Ioannis Ioannidis. #spatialanalysis #spatialdataanalysis #kth

SUPRIYA M. is the latest doctoral student to join the Dig-IT Lab. With double master's degrees in sustainable energy systems from #KTH and #UPC, she will focus on developing a full-scale digital twin for a building in collaboration with industry partners Einar Mattsson AB and EQUA Simulation AB. This project aims to enhance efficiency and sustainability in building operations. "Real-time data exchange enabled by #digitaltwins offers a major advantage over traditional static building modelling tools," SUPRIYA M. says. #KTH is seeking a doctoral student specialising in Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA). This project aims to increase the knowledge about CMA, a technology that reduces resource usage, energy consumption, and the environmental impact of road construction and maintenance. As a doctoral student, you will conduct experiments and numerical modelling on bitumen emulsions, binders, and CMA mixtures. You will also use Finite Element analyses and a Life Cycle Assessment framework to evaluate the impact of the CMA technology on road sustainability. The project is a collaboration between KTH and Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). The Swedish Competence Centre in Road Technology (KCV) will fund it for four years. While studded winter tires can be lifesaving, the hard metal studs damage asphalt and harms air quality in urban areas by releasing dangerous, inhalable particles. Professor Ulf Olofsson and his team have successfully tested alternative cobalt-free hard metal studs to reduce particulate emissions. The new material provides the same level of grip on ice and packed snow while significantly minimising damage to the road surface. Please read more in the article: https://lnkd.in/dCB52RGB #studdedtires #cobaltfree #particleemissions #roadwear

“Is Stockholm really lacking parking spaces, or is it just a problem of misallocation causing congestion?” 🚙🤔⁉️ As second-year master’s students in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology Dinara Kubashova and I are exploring how reducing parking spaces could help Stockholm reach its 2030 climate targets. While some areas seem to suffer from a parking shortage, others have garages already converted for new uses. So, where is the mismatch between parking supply and demand, and what factors contribute to it? Could addressing this mismatch not only reduce congestion but also free up urban space for greener, more people-friendly uses? We are using GIS-based spatial analysis to conduct our research. The process will undoubtedly evolve along the way, and we’re curious to see what conclusions emerge in the end. We’re fortunate to receive guidance and support from traffic planners at Tyréns AB including Henrick Sundbom , as well as our supervisors from KTH —Ioannis Ioannidis, a GIS expert and researcher, and Greger Henriksson, a docent and researcher in parking and sustainability. We’re always happy to connect with anyone interested in these ideas. Let’s exchange thoughts and explore new perspectives together! ✨ #parkingmanagement #degreeproject #gisanalysis #Stockholm2030 #examensarbete
