How can we involve citizens in urban planning in inclusive ways? What are the technologies of humility that city planners use to approach their citizens and cities? And in what ways does art help us better understand urban planning? These questions were discussed at the concluding workshop of the NordForsk initiative on Sustainable Urban Development and Smart Cities, which took place at Aalborg Universitet on 30 September 2024. Following the workshop, the NordForsk delegation participated in the 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns, #Aalborg2024, networking with European colleagues. Our own Special Adviser Kyösti Lempa was present together with Ethel Forsberg, Kristina Laurell from Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, Maria Alm from Swedish Energy Agency, Risto Vilkko from Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia, Natalie Marie Gulsrud, Luciane Aguiar Borges from Nordregio, Tuomas Ahola from Tampere University, Kjell Nilsson, Erik Andersson from Stockholm University, Enza Lissandrello from Aalborg Universitet, Karin Ekman and Nuria Castell from NILU. The city partners have done invaluable and superb work to ensure that the NordForsk initiative produces tangible results. Special thanks to our city planning experts, who provided excellent examples of Nordic cities working toward more inclusive sustainability: Martina Andersson Else Dybkjaer, Stavanger Kjersti Wilhelmsen, Lier Peter Wiborn, Stockholm The synthesis essay "Technologies of Humility" by Mustafa Dikec and Olga Stepanova, as well as the summary of the Synthesis Essay in a policy brief by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and Hilma Ruokolainen, were inspired by the NordForsk projects.
