Twitter is launching a new tool called “Suggestions for You” in the hopes of making it easier for users to find the right accounts to follow. The tool is rolling out today; I don’t have it on my main @mattmcgee account, but it does appear on the home page of my @atu2 account. (atu2.com is my long-running hobby site about U2.)

When logged in, a mini-version of “Suggestions for You” shows in the upper right of the Twitter home page. Clicking the “view all” link leads to a new tab/page in the Find People area, which (for unknown reasons) recommends different users than on Twitter.com.

Twitter says the suggestions “are based on several factors, including people you follow and the people they follow.” If you don’t like a suggestion, click the “Hide” link and Twitter will “try not to suggest that user again.”

Suggestions for You will also appear when viewing another Twitter user’s profile.

This is the latest step in Twitter’s ongoing attempts to help people find new accounts to follow. The home page redesign earlier this year focused on introducing users to one another. Earlier this month, Twitter began showing usernames/accounts in response to name-based searches on Twitter.com. And as far back as March 2009 Twitter began showing a suggested users list to new members.
