IMITATIONS is a collection of armour and clothing mash-ups that I have put together for my characters, using vanilla models. As I have made these items first and foremost for my own game, and my own characters, the mod is provided as-is. If you do not like a certain piece, or how the crafting is handled, please keep in mind that you do not have to use it :).

If you are interested in using it, please read the description. I know wall-of-texts are not fun to go through, but I have tried to provide as much information as I can to help you with troubleshooting potential issues you may have. For easier navigation, you can follow these links:

Description

Imitations comes with more than 30 sets of outfits that I have created over time (so they will range in quality and execution from Excruciatingly Horrible to Horrible-yet-Bearable), with some of them having colour variants depending on the vanilla models used. While I tried to keep everything beast-race compatible with the last update, a person — namely, me — has their limits, and certain hooded-helmet versions are not helmeted for Argonian or Khajiit characters. Those items are noted specifically in Previews and Documentation. As well as a couple of new add-ons, I have also included generically-renamed versions of vanilla items (such as Thieves Guild, Dawnguard, or College-specific ones) for possible mix-and-matching. These are available for all vanilla races.

All of the pieces come in Light armour variant, however, wherever I felt that was appropriate, I have included Unarmoured and Heavy versions as well. The stats and prices are roughly based on their vanilla equivalents. Each set also comes with ‘Refined’ versions, with custom enchantments and crafting restrictions (you can read more on this under Crafting. Depending on your load order, Imitations will also replace the models for Summerset Shadows armours, and Linwe’s armour.

If you own the Alternative Armours - Steel Soldier Creation, you can also enable in-game an armour I made using its assets (it’s the scarf, I had to use the scarf in something). It’s not intrusive to gameplay otherwise, and you can continue playing without that specific set if you do not own the Creation associated with it.

As of version 2, Imitations comes with its very own Immersive™ quest, and introduces Raymond Lumine, TES’ first battle-tailor. While it is possible to skip the quest entirely, we at the Imitations HQ (sforzinda and their cat), recommend you to complete it once for the ultimate Immersive™ experience, and if you do, read the next section: Radiant Raymond.

Radiant Raymond

Raymond Lumine of Alcaire, a prominent couturier who has worked in High Rock and Alinor has at last made his way to Skyrim. Upon installing (or updating to the latest version of) Imitations, you may find that guards in certain holds (specifically those in Solitude, Markarth, and Whiterun, as well as in Dragon Bridge) are suddenly critical of your attire, and suggest you might want to visit Radiant Raiment in Solitude. This will start the eponymous quest, Radiant Raymond.

The quest is very straightforward: it will kick off once the guards in aforementioned holds mention you look like you might need fancy clothes. You will receive a journal entry suggesting you to ‘go about’ your day, and the quest will update once you receive an invitation to visit Radiant Raiment in Solitude.

Raymond starts the game as initially disabled, so you will not find him in Solitude prior to completing Radiant Raymond. To circumvent potential issues with starting the quest, or to skip it altogether, you can craft an item called Home-Brewed Mead at any cooking pot, which you can consume to force-complete the quest and spawn Raymond as an NPC in Radiant Raiment. As this completes the quest automatically, you can also use it if you have started the quest, but for some reason are not receiving a visit from the Courier.

Once he is in-game, Raymond will offer a number of his designs, and several generic itms as well as the supplies to craft them, at Radiant Raiment in Solitude. As he is constantly moving shipments around (he still has his businesses in High Rock and Alinor, after all), the selection he offers at any given time is a bit chaotic, so make sure to drop by and check in with him often if you do not want to craft the items, but still would like to acquire them.

There are certain in-game triggers that will add more items to his inventory. If you complete the quest Search and Seizure, he will begin selling Thalmor-themed attire. If you re-take Solitude with the Thieves Guild (after completing The Dainty Sload), he may stock some Summerset Shadows pieces for you. If you own the Alternative Armours - Steel Soldier Creation, you can place a custom order for an Auridon Cuirass with him. Simply purchase the ‘Custom Order’ notice from Raymond (it will be listed under Miscellaneous) and activate/equip it in your inventory. Imitations will check if you have the Creation active in your load order, and if you do, will add the Auridon Cuirass in his stock (it still has a rather low chance of spawning, though; Raymond has never been known for being punctual).

Raymond will only offer his services when he is inside Radiant Raiment during his business hours (you will not find him standing behind the counter 24/7), between 12:00 and 18:00. His works are on high demand, so if you arrive at Radiant Raiment on time and do not see him inside, wait an hour (or two, maybe three; the AI packages in this game are quite iffy), and he will eventually show up. He will not leave Solitude on his own, though, so if you find him outside for one reason or another, he has possibly achieved consciousness and sentience, and I have no powers of stopping him.

If you have Relationship Dialogue Overhaul installed, you can also pick Raymond up as a follower in your travels (he will not offer his services while on the road, as his entire stock is at Radiant Raiment). He may require persistent persuasion and even a bit of bribery, but he will eventually give in. That is, after you first give him 500 Septims to invest in his store. Raymond is essential, and will level up with the player (from level 15, until 65). He prefers one handed weapons and light armour, will not set off traps, or affect stealth. He knows a few spells to heal himself on the go, but that is his entire knowledge of magic. Due to his voice type, RDO is required to be able to use him as a follower.

In order to be able to add-items into Raymond’s inventory based on quest completions, and to enable him as a follower, Imitations runs three quests in the background that will periodically (once in every five minutes) fire very short scripts to check for these events. If you are uninstalling Imitations, or simply are not interested in the items he will offer after the aforementioned quests/will not pick him up as a follower, you can craft an item called Home-Brewed Wine at a cooking pot, which you can consume to shut these checks off permanently.

Compatibility, Load Order, and Performance

Imitations has nearly 3000 records (I know, it’s ridiculous), and less than 10 of them overwrite vanilla ones: they are the armour records for Summerset Shadows and Linwe’s armours, and the dialogue branches for starting the quest and adding Raymond as a vendor. It makes no edits to levelled lists, and does not touch the vanilla crafting stations in any way.

In the latest version of Imitations there are minor edits to three cells, namely in Radiant Raiment, Temple of the Divines, and the New Gnisis Cornerclub. While these edits are for adding specific items only, and do not touch the overall CELL records, if you have a mod that makes edits to these cells (such as lighting mods, which often include imagespace changes for cells), make sure to load Imitations before them to keep their changes intact.

The quest for spawning Raymond in Solitude is triggered with a dialogue line for the guards. It makes no permanent changes to the specific line, therefore it can easily be overwritten if you have a mod that overhauls guard dialogue, it may result in not triggering Radiant Raymond at all. If you find this to be the case, you can use the item Home-Brewed Mead (crafted at any cooking pot) to force-complete the quest and spawn Raymond.

If you have mods in your load order that edit the ARMO records (stats, prices, etc.) for the Summerset Shadows and Linwe’s armours, simply load the mod with the changes you prefer lower. The models of these armours from Imitations will still be available via crafting (and purchasing from Raymond).

A patch for USSEP users is provided as a separate file, for forwarding USSEP-specific keywords for the Summerset Shadows and Linwe’s armours, as well as the line count for the dialogue branches.

As I have used vanilla models, the armours and clothing items in this mod are based on the vanilla body shape. Similarly, the pieces are put together with vanilla textures in mind. If your favourite texture replacer strats too much from vanilla designs, the models in Imitations may look odd. (I am using my own texture recolours, as well as a mish-mash of various other retextures in the preview images.)

A patch for CBBE users is available as a separate download on Nexus, provided by colleeeenmk.

Please note that Imitations is not performance friendly in the sense that every model is made of several pieces, and will load each texture separately. While this is not to say that equipping one armour will turn your game into a flaming ball of doom visible rom outer space, when equipped by several NPCs at once, this is bound to have an effect on the VRAM usage. If you are “running 250 mods at your 300-hour offline save with no problems on the console,” you may want to give Imitations a pass.

If you are on the console, and would like to skip all the hassle of crafting and/or want to check out the items first, I have added a respawning chest in the QASmoke cell (location). The chest refreshes its contents every time it closes, and it also contains the crafting materials, Tailoring Supplies, and other miscellaneous items from Imitations as well. You may need a mod like ‘Cheat Room’ that allows you to teleport to and from QASmoke to be able to use this chest.

If you are on PC, you can use the console to search for ‘sfImitations’ (without quotes) to find the IDs for the containers that contain each of the sets, and spawn them in the world accordingly.

Crafting

Everything added by Imitations can be crafted with Tailoring Supplies only (meaning: you will not find items from Imitations on the vanilla crafting stations). Depending on how you complete the quest Radiant Raymond, you can either purchase one from him, or one will be added to your inventory directly.

You can find the Tailoring Supplies under Miscellaneous in your inventory, and activate/equip it to open up the crafting menu. There are options for different actions:

  • Craft: Lets you (unsurprisingly) craft the base versions of items.
  • Refine: Lets you ‘enchant’ the base versions, by crafting the enchanted versions of items.
  • Recycle: Lets you turn the items into their Linen counterparts.
  • Temper: Lets you — you guessed it — temper Imitations-added and vanilla items.

(Please note that if you are updating Imitations from an older version, you will find the older set of Tailoring Supplies to be obsolete. Due to how scripts are attached to the items, the older version will not function, and you can safely sell, or drop it into a respawning container to get rid of it.)

For crafting, Imitations includes two new materials for some of the recipes: Linen and Netch Leather Strips. These items are craftable-only (under ‘Recycle’), and you will not find them as loot (though Raymond will be selling some).

1 Linen Wrap will yield 4 Linens
3 Tundra Cotton will yield 1 Linen
2 Hanging Moss will yield 1 Linen
2 Emperor Parasol Moss will yield 1 Linen
Each of the regular clothing items (Clothes, Belted Tunic etc.) will yield 4 Linens
1 Netch Leather will yield 3 Netch Leather Strips

You can also break armours and clothing items added by Imitations down into their linen counterparts under ‘Recycle’. However the recipes for these will not become available if you still have the piece you want to break down equipped. In order to break enchanted versions down into linen, you need to turn them into the base version first (under ‘Refine’).

For the Dunmeri-styled items that uses ingredients from the Dragonborn DLC, I have added alternative recipes that uses ingredients that are available in Skyrim if you are not on Solstheim (substituting Mudcrab Chitin for Chitin Plates, and regular Leather for Netch Leathers). The recipes that use Dragonborn ingredients will still be available on Solstheim.

The ‘Refined’ versions of certain armours require the player to have blessings on them (as Active Effects) from shrines that only exist in DLC areas. In order to craft them easily (or to help with role-playing, however you see it), I have added two books in cells in Skyrim that will act as shrines. At the Temple of the Divines in Solitude (on a pew by the aisle), you will find a ‘Book of Contemplations’ which, upon activating, will give player the Blessing of Auri-El. At the New Gnissis Cornerclub (atop a dresser on the first floor), you will find a ‘Prayer Book of Reclamations,’ which will give the player a blessing of their choice from the three good Daedra. (The activation box for the Prayer Book of Reclamations is a bit wonky, therefore be carful not to steal the nearby clutter items by accident.)

For the quest-specific requirements for crafting the base and enchanted versions of certain pieces, please check the Previews and Documentation section below.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

I want to uninstall Imitations!
While it is not advised to change your load order mid-game, you can uninstall Imitations at any point you like. Just don’t forget to use the Home-Made Wine item (craftable at any cooking pot) to stop three event-checking quests that are running in the background.

I cannot get the quest to start/finish!
The specific line that will trigger the quest is added to guards’ dialogue for specific areas only (Solitude, Dragon Bridge, Markarth, and Whiterun), so first of all be sure you are in one of these towns. If you have a mod that limits the radius for triggering the passing dialogue for NPCs, it is possible you will not trigger it at all, and might need to ‘talk’ to the guards until they say the specific line instead. And lastly, if you have a mod that overhauls the guard dialogue altogether, it might be overwriting the line Imitations’ quest script is attached to.

To test if any other mod is overwriting Imitations’ dialogue change, pick a random guard in Dragon Bridge, Markarth, or Whiterun (as Solitude guards has this line by default anyway), and talk to them until they begin repeating their lines. If nothing is overwriting the ‘I don’t abide by fancy clothes, but you look like you might’ line, then the guard will eventually say it.

If you have started the quest, but now cannot finish it (the Courier did not appear, or did not deliver the note that will progress the stages), or you cannot get the dialogue to appear altogether, then you can craft the Home-Made Mead item at a cooking pot and consume it to force-complete the quest and spawn Raymond in Solitude.

Raymond is not in Radiant Raiments!
Raymond is a busy person! Make sure you are at the Radiant Raiment between his business hours. Depending on the time of the day, his AI package might have him present at the Winking Skeever, Blue Palace, or the Castle Dour grounds. Since Skyrim’s AI packages have been famously unreliable since day one, it is possible he can run an hour (or two, possibly three) late between his appointments. If you are at the Radiant Raiment between his working hours and he is not there, try waiting in one-hour increments (also check the small alcove behind the counter area, as he likes standing there).

I cannot craft anything/this specific item!
First of all, none of the items in Imitations will not show up in the vanilla crafting stations (Forge, Tanning Rack, Anvil, Smelter etc.), except the Workbench for tempering them. If you are not finding a unique Snow Elf cuirass at Alvor’s forge, that is indeed the intended behaviour.

Due to how scripts work, you need to use the new Tailoring Supplies item added by the latest update (the older one is affixed with ‘(Obsolete)’ to help you tell them apart). Make sure you are using the Tailoring Supplies item you have purchased from Raymond (or added to you inventory directly upon force-completing the quest). You can find it under Miscellaneous in your inventory, and you will need to equip/activate it to use the crafting menu (the game will tell you that you cannot equip this item, and the game is right, you cannot equip it, but you can use it still).

Certain items will not appear if you have not done their quests, or do not meet the race requirements. Make sure to check the Previews and Documentation section to see if you are missing any requirements.

If the item you want to craft still does not appear after completing its requirement, then it’s possible I might have an error in its crafting recipe (in my defence, there are too many recipes in this mod). Please feel free to contact me, and I will look into it. In the meantime, you can use the chest I have added into the QASmoke cell to grab the item you want.

Everything clips so badly! Also, this specific item has gaps when worn with those specific boots!
I know! Have you seen my preview images? It’s hard to pin-point one that does not have clipping. Pretty much none of the pieces in Imitations were intended to go together with one another, and I am not patient enough with manual weight painting to fix stretching/clipping for all animations. I tried my best, and the results were good enough for me, so that’s the stage I left them at. If something annoys me, I’ll try to fix it in the future, but that seems to be a distant possibility.

The way the game handles equipment slots (specifically the Forearms and Calves) is by ‘hiding’ certain parts of the mesh when they are equipped on top of another. These sections are called ‘Partitions,’ and the way it works is: if a clothing mesh has a specific partition for Calves, then this section will be hidden when the player equips a set of boots that also has the Calves partition set. This works most of the time (especially with the items that are intended to go together), but since Skyrim’s models are not high-poly enough to have corresponding vertices for each item, these partitions will not correspond exactly. If the mesh for the trousers have a larger Calves partition than the boots you have equipped, then you may see gaps below the knee. If it is smaller, then it will clip through the boots. For most cases, I went with the latter option, as clipping is less annoying than invisible joints.

This specific item does not show up on my beast-race character!
For the accessories (specifically, bracers that show hands, and hoods/helmets that show the head), beast-races often need their own meshes. While I tried to provide as much as I could, there are a few instances that I skipped them to preserve what is left of my sanity (that, and I do not play with beast-races enough to actually need any of these items). The items that do not have full beast-race support are noted specifically, however if you come across one that I missed, please let me know and I can update the description accordingly.

I don’t like the stats of this specific item/it’s not lore-friendly/it’s not immersive enough!
You are more than welcome to make all the edits you want to this mod for personal use/or for sharing with others. Just make sure to glance over my permissions, and those of the other MAs whose work I used in the mod.

I, the important internet individual, want you, the hobbyist peasant, to create an armour specifically for my character!
Thank-you, but no.

I have other concerns that are not addressed in this uninformative section!
Contact me. I cannot guarantee a timely response, but I try my best. (However if it’s a request, I guarantee no response at all.)

Permissions

All of the assets created by me are open-permissions to use, modify, and upload, given that any other work derived from them will include full credits, will carry over the same permissions, and will not be used in any paid or donation-only mods.

For assets that use other people’s works, permission is not entirely mine to give, and you should also check permissions for the original mods linked in the credit sections.

Please do not re-host my mods on other platforms (such as Nexus, or Bethesda.net for PCs) in their entirety, as I prefer they remain in one place only. You can link to their respective pages for directing users.
