  • 🇻🇳🇲🇿 Strengthening Ties: Mozambique and Vietnam 🤝 On September 10, Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi visited the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA) in Hanoi, highlighting nearly 50 years of strong relations between #Vietnam and #Mozambique. Established in 1949, HCMA has played a pivotal role in training over 100,000 leadership and management officials in Vietnam and beyond, equipping leaders with essential skills in political science, socio-economic development, and administrative reform. 📚 President Nyusi expressed admiration for the academy's achievements and emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation, particularly in training courses tailored for Mozambique’s officials. This includes topics like party leadership, e-government, and security-defence strategies. Additionally, President Nyusi toured Viettel, a major player in telecommunications operating in 10 countries, including Mozambique. Known as Movitel in Mozambique, this partnership has significantly contributed to the country’s digital transformation since its establishment in 2010. The President lauded Movitel's success as a symbol of economic cooperation and committed to supporting Viettel's continued investment in Mozambique. As global dynamics shift, the collaboration between Mozambique and Vietnam presents an exciting opportunity for mutual growth and learning. By leveraging educational exchanges and economic partnerships, both countries can enhance their leadership capabilities and drive forward innovative solutions. • 🚀 To infinity and beyond! A recent article by CNN highlights the growing potential of the #aerospace industry in #Africa which could be worth $22.6 billion by 2026, up from $19.5 billion in 2021, according to the consultancy Space in Africa. Reflecting the region’s commitment to the industry, the African Space Agency (AfSA) was recently inaugurated in January 2023, with the African Union Commission laying out a six-year implementation plan and a budget of more than $35 million to reach full operationalization. 📶 The benefits of aerospace goes beyond just exploration. Currently, Africa has around 60 satellites in orbit, which can be used to increase #connectivity, boost agricultural yields, surveil borders, monitor water quality, and prevent illegal mining and fishing. Better data from Earth observation could unlock more than $2 billion in value for Africa, according to a 2021 report by the World Economic Forum. More than 20 countries now have national space programs, and African nations budgeted more than $400 million for the sector in 2024, according to Space in Africa. 📚 However, much work still needs to be done to reach that potential: a workforce will need to be trained in everything from space diplomacy and law, to how to build small, affordable satellites. From there, work will need to be done to harness and process the data provided by satellites. Agencies such as the AfSA are assisting with these ambitions through creating a regulatory framework and coordinating space activities across the continent to enhance efficiency and make it easier for foreign partners, like the European Space Agency, to collaborate with Africa. It could also help get continent-wide initiatives off the ground, like a constellation of Earth observation satellites that could provide high-resolution imagery for all of Africa. Read more about Africa’s ambitions in space in the CNN article here: https://lnkd.in/eYKfkWrb. Want to stay updated about the latest developments in Africa and South East Asia? • 🎮 Game On! In 2023, the global gaming industry hit a remarkable $350 billion in revenue, surpassing movies, music, and streaming combined. Lucy Hoffman, writing for the World Economic Forum, highlights how Africa has emerged as the fastest-growing market for mobile games. Given the continent's rapid population growth and its youthful demographic, combined with growing smartphone adoption, interest in gaming as well as the services that support it has grown. 💡 For example, the booming gaming industry in Africa presents a golden opportunity for fintech to drive both gaming and broader financial inclusion across the continent. In recent years, Africa has experienced a fintech revolution: countries like Nigeria and Kenya are leading the charge with innovations in mobile money and digital payments, and Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounts for 66% of global mobile money transaction value. This fintech surge could be a game-changer for the gaming industry, which has traditionally relied on app stores not fully compatible with Africa’s innovative payment solutions. 🌟 As the African gaming market is projected to exceed $1 billion in 2024, the actual potential may be even greater. By understanding and addressing the unique needs of African gamers, the industry can unlock significant revenue and create immersive, engaging experiences that resonate with a vibrant and growing audience. • 📰 Olam Agri, a subsidiary of our member Olam and a market-leading agribusiness, was recently featured on Forbes Afrique! 🌾 Last month, the Forbes Afrique editorial team published an article about the agri-food and agricultural revolution in the Ivory Coast, discussing the key topics of industrialisation, sustainability, and professionalisation of the workforce. With the agricultural sector employing 50% of the active workforce and contributing 22% of the Ivory Coast’s GDP, it serves as the driving force of the country’s current economic and social growth. ♻️ Olam Agri is one of the forces leading this charge as the top bean crusher in the Ivory Coast, with upcoming plans to open its third cotton ginning factory. But it has not done so irresponsibly. "Our initiatives [in the rubber sector (editor's note)] aim to reduce deforestation, decarbonize our activities, and provide traceability solutions to guarantee a durable rubber in accordance with international legislation,” said Mr. Partheeban Theodore, the president and regional head of Olam Agri. 👏 We applaud Olam Agri and Olam International for its successes in the Ivory Coast and steadfast dedication to sustainability efforts. We look forward to seeing it continue to prosper in the region! Want to learn more? • 🎙️ In a recent podcast from The Brookings Institution, Chido Munyati, the head of Africa at the World Economic Forum, sat down with host Landry Signé to discuss regional economic integration in Africa, especially with regards to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Free Continental Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). 📖 Mr. Munyati shared that there were four main priorities for economic development in the region, aligned to Agenda 2063. The first relates to advancing initiatives to support Africa’s youth, with more than a third of the world’s young people expected to be from the region by 2050. To that end, there are various initiatives addressing skills and training in the region such as skills accelerators in South Africa and Nigeria. ⚡ Second on the list would be energy consumption, with the mobilisation of financing to support energy infrastructure in Africa as the priority. Many projects around this are already underway, especially in clean energy, with a report published in July that looks at specific opportunities and gaps in finance and clean energy in Africa, which also had the presence of regional CEOs from South Africa identifying those opportunities. 🖥️ Third is digital inclusion in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. Currently, there is a network of 16 affiliate centers for the fourth industrial revolution located around the world. These centers serve as trusted spaces for public-private cooperation, pursuing a human-centric approach to technology adoption, as well as governance. Of the 16, one is in Rwanda and one is in South Africa. The first global AI summit in Africa will also be hosted in October this year, in collaboration with the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Rwanda. 🌍 Lastly, the final priority is around accelerating regional integration. The Forum has an initiative called the Forum Friends of the AfCFTA. This is an effort to mobilize global businesses and the private sector to support with implementation of the AfCFTA, and encourages the consideration of strategies to deepen the regional value chains in Africa by investing in critical infrastructure. In collaboration with these private sector companies, the first ever private sector action plan for the AfCFTA was launched, that includes key commitments from these private sector partners.
