Oil and Gas
The voice of the gas industry in Asia. Supporting reliable, lower-carbon energy for Asia’s future.
About us
ANGEA is the voice of the gas industry in Asia, with a membership that spans the full global value chain: from production, to transport, infrastructure, manufacturing, end users, and others. Our purpose is to work constructively with governments, society and industry throughout Asia, to build effective and integrated energy policies that meet each country’s climate objectives while promoting national and regional economic sustainable growth. This includes the ability of nations to access natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuels that provide energy security and which will support Asia’s transition away from high-emitting coal.

This is encouraging support for Australian gas by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Australian LNG exports are not only critical to the energy system of Japan but other established gas users such as South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. LNG from Australia will also be important in supporting the ability of emerging economies like the Philippines and Vietnam to realise their long-term plans to switch out coal for gas in power generation. It’s essential that Australia continues to develop major gas projects and be a reliable energy trading partner to enable emerging Asia to balance economic growth with progress on emissions reductions. #lng #naturalgas #energysecurity #energytransition #decarbonisation #decarbonization

Another promising cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain starting to take shape from Asia. Under the terms of a recently signed memorandum of understanding, ANGEA member company Sumitomo Corporation will work with "K" line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd) to assess the feasibility of capturing CO2 in Japan and shipping it to Alaska for storage at sites selected by Hilcorp. Alaska is estimated to have up to 50 times the geological storage space of Japan for CO2 and there are hopes full-scale operations could begin by 2030. #carboncapture #ccs #energytransition #decarbonisation #decarbonization

Pleasing to see Singapore and South Korea further strengthening their LNG cooperation with an MOU to explore joint procurement of the fuel. LNG imports are increasingly important to Singapore, which generates the vast majority of its power from gas. Collaboration as part of this deal will help enhance the country's energy security. #lng #naturalgas #energysecurity

This is a significant challenge for decision makers in Asia as they work to map out what their countries' energy systems will look like to 2050 and beyond. While emerging Asia is keen to use more gas as it seeks to reduce a reliance on high-emitting coal-fired power generation, it's extremely difficult to make energy decisions for coming decades when you don't know what the LNG supply landscape will look like. Demand on what gas is available is only increasing with the rise of artificial intelligence and the strong growth in data centres around the world. It's essential that leading gas-exporting nations - notably the US and Australia - continue to support the development of major LNG projects that will help meet Asia's future energy needs. #lng #naturalgas #energytransition #energysecurity #decarbonisation #decarbonization

"The reality is that emerging nations in Asia must find a way to meet rising energy demand. Curtailing energy use and preventing economic advancement is not a scenario that anyone should be willing to countenance." ANGEA CEO Paul Everingham assesses the delicate balancing act that fast-growing nations in Asia face as they make vital decisions about their energy systems while attempting to reduce emissions. #lng #naturalgas #energytransition #energysecurity #decarbonisation #decarbonization
Asia's energy future needs to be spoken about around the world

PETRONAS, in collaboration with ASEAN energy sector operators, government agencies, and international organisations, launched the ASEAN Energy Sector Methane Leadership Program 2.0 (MLP 2.0) to further drive methane emissions reduction efforts in the ASEAN region. Themed “Turning Capacity into Action”, MLP 2.0 is a continuation of the inaugural Methane Leadership Program that progressed from June 2023 to October 2024. MLP 2.0 seeks to enhance collaboration between companies and governments, as well as drive collective regional actions on methane emissions reduction strategies and initiatives to support the Global Methane Pledge that has been signed by over 150 countries, including Malaysia and five other ASEAN countries. The MLP is a key component of PETRONAS’ Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 Pathway and is aligned with PETRONAS’ commitments to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) and the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter. #PETRONAS #PassionateAboutProgress ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE) ASEAN Centre for Energy Asia Natural Gas & Energy Association Commercial Law Development Program Environmental Defense Fund Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) Methane Guiding Principles Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation PT Pertamina (Persero)

ANGEA member company Woodside Energy and the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) have entered into a memorandum of understanding based on their joint interest in methane emissions management. As part of the three-year agreement, JOGMEC will introduce Woodside to Japanese organisations looking to collaborate on technology development related to the detection and quantification of methane emissions. It's another strong indication of the commitment throughout the global gas value chain to address emissions wherever possible, including methane emissions. Announcement of the the MOU followed recent news that 20 more Japanese LNG importers were poised to sign up to the CLEAN - a methane-focused decarbonisation initiative launched by JERA Co., Inc. and KOGAS with support from the Australian and US Governments and the European Commission. #methane #decarbonisation #lng #naturalgas #decarbonization #energytransition

Vietnam's first LNG-to-power project is a step closer to being a reality, with signing of a power purchase agreement between PETROVIETNAM and Vietnam Electricity for output from the Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plants. The two facilities are scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2025 and will be the first Vietnamese power plants to exclusively use LNG as fuel. Vietnam is looking to reduce its current reliance on coal and its Power Development Plan 8 outlines strong ambitions for LNG to underpin that transition. The country only became an LNG importer for the first time in 2023 but PDP8 projects LNG making up nearly 15% of its primary energy mix by 2030. #lng #naturalgas #vietnam #energytransition #decarbonisation #decarbonization
