Global wearable band market up 0.2% in Q2 2024 as basic watches take biggest share yet Wearable band shipments reached 44.3 million devices. Basic watches continued to drive the market, with shipments up 6% year on year, largely thanks to Huawei and Xiaomi Technology. Basic watches accounted for 48% of the wearable band market, their highest share yet. Smartwatch shipments remained static compared with Q2 2023, as the positive momentum from Samsung Electronics, Garmin, #Huawei and Google offset #Apple’s decline. Basic band shipments continued on their downward trend, falling 14% year on year. Device ecosystem vendors are increasingly exploring eSIM-enabled watches supporting 4G/5G connectivity, “Wearable band vendors are increasingly diversifying their portfolios to capture new opportunities, focusing on new segments, technologies and software,” said Canalys Research Analyst Jack Leathem. Canalys anticipates double-digit growth in smartwatch shipments in H2 2024, driven by new offerings from Apple, #Samsung and #Google. “Advanced features will be vital to maintain the appeal of smartwatches, as basic watches, which lack these capabilities, will eventually hit a ceiling in terms of functionality and innovation.” said Canalys Research Manager Cynthia (Qiufan) Chen. Telco edge clouds are primed to handle surging PC and smartphone traffic The proliferation of PCs and mobile devices continues to lead to surges in data traffic, warranting the deployment of more edge clouds to handle data processing closer to end-user devices. Principal Analyst Devan Adams writes that channel partners will be vital to the evolution of connectivity, where telcos seize control of the edge, by competing and cooperating with hyperscalers. New edge-based partners’ services and solutions will amplify the capabilities of telco edge clouds, driving a seismic shift across every industry. According to Ericsson, global mobile data traffic is estimated to reach 174 exabytes per month this year, up from 136 exabytes in 2023. This massive increase highlights the need for sustainable solutions, as AI data processing consumes significant energy. Canalys Analyst Ben Caddy suggests that reallocating workloads to maximize renewable energy use could be a key strategy for both central and edge clouds. Canalys estimates that the 2024 total addressable markets for PCs and smartphones will reach US$218 billion and US$49 billion respectively, with year-on-year growth of 8.7% for PCs and 1.4% for smartphones. Channel partners will benefit as 74% of PC and 92% of smartphone spend flows through the channel in 2024. 🔒 Managed cybersecurity services face an existential threat? As the number of channel partners delivering cybersecurity-managed services skyrockets, there is a growing concern about their security and reliability. With managed detection and response (MDR) services projected to grow by 50% in 2024, the landscape is getting more complex- and the stakes are higher than ever. Why should this matter to you? Many partners rely on third-party providers to deliver these services, but do they truly understand the extent of the response and remediation capabilities being offered? The rising number of legal disputes between channel partners and customers following cyber-breaches suggests a critical disconnect. Discover key strategies for navigating this complex landscape in our latest blog on channel partner and vendor approaches to MDR:  https://lnkd.in/gH4i3GeV Join us at #CanalysForums2024 for a deep dive into the “MSP Reality Check” Expert Hub. The AI-capable PC market is gaining momentum. Canalys forecasts shipments to reach 44 million units by the end of 2024 and 103 million units by 2025. A recent survey of channel partners revealed that nearly 60% expect customers to favor devices with AI-related features, like a #Copilot key. This strong market alignment suggests a bright future for AI-capable PCs.   Vendor highlights: Apple is leading the charge with its M-series chips and the upcoming Apple Intelligence. Apple boasts the highest AI-capable PC shipments. The broad compatibility of these features with existing #Macs positions Apple for rapid user adoption as AI experiences roll out. Lenovo, the highest-selling PC vendor globally, saw a 228% sequential growth in AI-capable PC shipments, driven by the launch of Snapdragon X-powered PCs like the #YogaSlim 7x and #ThinkPad T14s. HP, with 8% of its #Windows shipments now AI-capable, HP is expanding its offerings with Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs and Core Ultra devices, solidifying its position in the AI PC market. Dell Technologies' commercial strength helped it achieve a nearly 7% AI-capable PC share in Windows shipments with the launch of Copilot+ PCs across its #XPS, #Latitude and #Inspiron lines. “With a strong foundation now set, AI-capable PC shipments are poised to gain further traction in the second half of 2024,” said Canalys Principal Analyst Ishan Dutt. Processor vendors and OEMs are set to target a wider base of customers through the availability of new product categories across more price points. The market performance of AI-capable PCs has largely aligned with expectations, and the industry remains on track to ship.   The growth of AI-capable PCs, particularly in the premium segment, is becoming increasingly evident. As first- and third-party applications continue to enhance their AI features, the value proposition for these devices will only strengthen, making them a key focus for the next wave of PC upgrades. 💻 🖥 Canalys strategy spotlight: Exploring generative AI PC opportunities in Mainland China AI-capable PCs are set to transform Mainland China's market, with shipments projected to hit 33 million by 2028, capturing 73% of the PC market. This surge presents a unique opportunity for PC vendors to innovate and lead in the AI era.   Key market insights: 🚀Market potential: Mainland China offers unparalleled opportunities for PC vendors to experiment with AI integration, as the absence of Microsoft Copilot creates a gap in the market. 👨💻 👩💻 Consumer sentiment: with strong government backing and a positive attitude toward AI, consumers and SMBs are eager to adopt AI-enhanced applications, especially flexible, plug-and-play solutions. 💡🌏 Go-to-market strategies:  vendors are pursuing two main strategies — offering standard AI-capable PCs or developing proprietary AI features and ecosystems, with the latter promising greater differentiation and market impact. African smartphone market expands modestly by 6% in Q2 2024 amid economic headwinds Shipments reached 17.8 million units in Q2 2024 as the robust double-digit recovery seen over the previous three consecutive quarters has been slowed down by macroeconomic volatility, including heightened inflation risks and renewed currency pressures due to lingering geopolitical tensions and political stability concerns related to elections.  North Africa outshines sub-Saharan Africa in the smartphone market. “Vendors leveraged the cost advantages carried over into the first half of the year to drive volume, resulting in an impressive 42% growth for sub-US$100 and 33% of the shipment was attributed to the price band,” said Canalys Senior Analyst Manish Pravinkumar. Feature phones still hold a substantial 52% share, and there are still many opportunities for smartphones to expand in the region. Lenovo held its Q1 24/25 earnings call on August 15, where it repeatedly emphasized the development and impact of AI PCs. Canalys, in the January report Now and Next for AI-capable PCs, highlighted the necessity for PC vendors to differentiate themselves in the AI PC market. Lenovo is achieving this differentiation through its "five-feature AI PC." In response to a question from our Principal Analyst, Ishan Dutt, #Lenovo mentioned the potential for such differentiated products to account for 50-60% of their shipments by 2026. This outlook was also clearly stated during the In Conversation with Canalys session featuring Ishan Dutt and Lenovo's Senior Vice President, Steve Long. Lenovo aims to enhance AI-capable PCs through the "3 Ps"—Personalization, Productivity, and Protected experience—hoping to gain consumer trust. Recent Canalys reports indicate that 8.8 million AI-capable PCs were shipped in Q2 2024, representing about 14% of the total market. As products featuring the latest platforms from #Intel, #AMD, and #Qualcomm continue to launch, this category is expected to grow rapidly throughout 2024.
