Bridging the Gap in #Aging #Research Biomarkers of aging (BOA) have shown incredible potential in predicting #biological age and improving #healthspan. However, translating these findings into clinical practice has been challenging. In a recent study co-authored by Prof. Andrea B. Maier, the team identifies six key barriers and offers practical recommendations to accelerate the clinical translation of BOA. Key insights focus on making biomarkers clinically actionable and affordable and enhancing their validation for broad use. Read more about their findings here: https://lnkd.in/ejYRJMKK

Transforming the way we age: A Healthier Future
About us
Centre for Healthy Longevity (CHL), based in Singapore, brings together scientists and clinicians to investigate the multifaceted aspects of ageing. Our mission is to add healthy years of life by delaying ageing, prolonging disease-free life and maintaining high functionality. We synergise basic and clinical science to develop biomarkers for measuring ageing, to test interventions that slow down ageing, and to create personalized implementation strategies that extend healthy life expectancy in Singapore and worldwide. Centre for Healthy Longevity is supported by National University of Singapore (NUS) and National University Health Systems (NUHS). At NUS, we are part of the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme of Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The programme aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the biology of ageing by identifying and manipulating common pathways that modulate ageing in vitro and in vivo, and then to seek methods for translation to humans. At NUHS, we are one of the six Centres of Excellence dedicated to advance breakthroughs in innovation, create new models of care, and forge collaborative partnership with the community, to improve the quality of life for Singaporeans.

Unlocking the Secrets of Aging Through the #Gut #Microbiome! In a groundbreaking study contributed by Prof. Andrea B. Maier and led by Aarthi Ravikrishnan and Eileen Png, researchers have mapped distinct microbial shifts in the gut of Asian octogenarians. By analyzing over 230 elderly individuals, they uncovered specific microbial species that could serve as biomarkers for healthy aging. Dive into how these findings are paving the way for interventions in promoting longevity. Read more: https://lnkd.in/erSNbYgg #GutMicrobiome #HealthyAging #ScientificResearch #Longevity

Exploring general practitioners (GPs) perspectives on late-life #depression in Singapore In our latest research, led by Prof. Andrea B. Maier and Anna Szücs, we delve into how GPs identify and manage late-life depression in older adults in Singapore. This study highlights the importance of detecting subtle symptoms often masked by cultural perceptions of ageing. Through interviews with 28 GPs, we uncover the challenges in diagnosing depression, particularly in male, low-income, or institutionalized patients. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ed9ZKV9p

A new study led by Prof. Andrea B. Maier and Laure Verstraeten highlights the impact of walking ability on the rehabilitation outcomes of older adults. Findings show that over 50% of patients admitted to geriatric rehabilitation are unable to walk independently, leading to longer hospital stays and reduced functional recovery. By integrating Progressive Resistance Training (PRT), the study demonstrates improvements in walking ability and daily functioning compared to usual care, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions in geriatric rehabilitation.
