When I spoke to outgoing Singapore Aquatics president Mark Chay, part of me expected the interview to be dominated by the recent news of his diagnosis, which in part was the reason he had chosen to step down from the admittedly high-stress and busy role. I didn’t expect him to be as passionate as he was about the swimming fraternity, especially in such a challenging period. He told me that his passion in giving back to the sports fraternity came when he was just 18 and just swam an Asian-leading time in his Olympic debut at Sydney. Seeing athletes from all over the world gave him the thought that he wanted as many here to be impacted positively by sports. Perhaps his wife Joanna phrased it best when I asked her if she thought the two-time Olympian was wearing too many hats. She told me: “As we got married and we had a child, I did suggest to him nicely to say, ‘Can you drop some commitments for family?’”But over the years she gradually realised that he was not taking on all those different responsibilities for the sake of it. “He goes into these positions with a genuine passion to want to help the community and do something good for the community… if you clip his wings, it will really take away what really drives him." Are you likely to opt for a "buffet" of medical procedures if they are covered by your insurance policy? Singapore Health Minister Ong Ye Kung pointed out that rising medical claims enabled by insurance policies are leading to an unhealthy "buffet syndrome" - where patients get more diagnostic tests or more expensive treatments - which in turn increases costs. On the Deep Dive podcast, Steven Chia and Crispina Robert sit down with Yit Ming Liaw, CEO of Foundation Healthcare Holdings and Christopher Tan, CEO of Providend, to break it down.
