CLC’s Regenerative City Forum Series kicked off with a lecture last week, titled “Thriving in a Climate-changed Future: Regenerative Design for High-Density Cities”. It explored how cities apply regenerative design in urban development, with opening remarks by CLC’s Executive Director Hugh Lim, and a keynote address from Professor Cheong Koon Hean, Chair, CLC Advisory Panel and Chair, Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Panellists Fred Holt, 3XN Professor Mun Summ Wong, Founding Director, WOHA Architects and Professor (Practice), National University of Singapore (NUS), and moderator Chintan Raveshia , Director, Arup Cities Business Leader, rounded off the lecture by discussing how regenerative principles could be applied at different urban scales and key role that governance and policy can play. The Regenerative City Forum series included a multi-sectoral workshop on benefits from a regenerative approach, with close to 70 participants from public agencies, industry and academia. Special thanks to SUTD, JTC Corporation and NUS’ Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) (SGFIN) for sharing. About us
Set up in 2008 by the Ministry of National Development and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) has as its mission “to distil, create and share knowledge on liveable and sustainable cities”. CLC’s work spans three main areas – Research, Capability Development & Advisory, and Knowledge Platforms. Through these activities, CLC hopes to provide urban leaders and practitioners with the knowledge and support needed to make our cities better.

CLC and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today for knowledge exchange and collaborations to address urbanisation in cities such as those that advance climate action, health and wellbeing, and urban liveability. The MoU was signed by CLC’s Executive Director, Hugh Lim, and Prof Lee Siang Tai, Deputy President, Chief Innovation and Enterprise Officer, Centre Director (DesignZ), Programme Director (Design and AI), SUTD, at a CLC Lecture Series event on Regenerative Design for High-Density Cities. Hugh said “CLC looks forward to deeper collaboration with SUTD with their strong research capabilities in innovative and technologically driven solutions that address climate and urban liveability challenges. These align well with CLC’s future-oriented research. These efforts will support Singapore’s future development and contribution to global discourse in creating liveable, sustainable and regenerative cities for the future.” Follow us for the latest updates on upcoming collaborations and new developments arising from this MoU with SUTD! #clcsg #urban #cities #sustainablecities #liveablecities #resilientcities

The latest issue of #UrbanSolutions is out now! Titled “Resilience and Regeneration”, this issue explores how urban planning, underpinned by regenerative design and development, enhances cities’ climate resilience. Regenerative design is an urban development approach for high-density cities to remain highly liveable in a climate-changed and resource-constrained future. This allows cities to achieve net benefits while addressing multiple developmental needs, rather than having to make trade-offs. Centred on regeneration, issue #25 examines key tenets of climate financing, carbon-sensitive design, and community engagement, reimagining the future of nature-centric, carbon-positive, and circular urban development. CLC hosted Xiamen Party Secretary Mr Cui Yonghui and a delegation, as well as Singapore’s Consul-General Xiamen Mr Chng Tze Chia, on a visit to the Singapore City Gallery, a tour of the mixed use neighbourhood at Tanjong Pagar and The Pinnacle@Duxton (public housing development). This was part of Party Secretary Cui’s visit to Singapore to strengthen cooperations between Singapore and Xiamen. During the visit, Michael Koh , Executive Fellow/CLC, presented an overview of Singapore’s urban transformation through long term planning, approach to public housing and balancing new development with heritage conservation. CLC documents and shares Singapore’s urban development experiences with our global counterparts through knowledge exchange, capability development programmes and at the World Cities Summit. We look forward to welcoming Xiamen’s city leaders to the World Cities Summit 14 to 16 June 2026 in Singapore. #clcsg #urban #cities #sustainablecities #liveablecities #resilientcities

CLC recently concluded a capability development course focusing on Sustainable Financing of Cities earlier this month, which welcomed participating government officials from Asia, Africa, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Organised under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Singapore Cooperation Programme Singapore Cooperation Programme, the course aimed to raise awareness and deepen fellow government officials’ knowledge on the sustainable financing of cities. Participants heard from experts and practitioners from Singapore government agencies, financial institutions such as Infrastructure Asia, and the World Bank Group, and the infrastructure and legal sectors. To complement the lectures, participants also visited the Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm and the Singapore City Gallery. CLC has curated three runs of this course, training nearly 80 participants in total. We would also like to acknowledge our partners for taking the time to share their best practices and experiences with our participants. Together we strive to address the infrastructure financing gap for a more sustainable shared future. CLC curated the first of our #clclectureseries for 2025, titled “What makes Cities Liveable and Loveable” earlier in February. This lecture explored how the urban practice of creating liveable and lovable cities must be both a science and an art - what makes a city tick and thrive, going beyond the brick-and-mortar façades of our cityscapes to uncover the ‘urban software’ and sense of place that define great cities. The session was moderated by Lekker Architects’ Ker-Shing Ong. In his keynote speech, CEO and President of Resonance Consultancy Ltd, Chris Fair introduced Resonance's approach to benchmarking city performance, emphasising the integration of perception-based questions alongside traditional indicators. Some salient points from his address: 💡 Three key perception questions: where people would prefer to live, visit, and find the best job opportunities 💡 New insights from traditional performance vs perception-based indicators should be used to complement the understanding of cities 💡 The way we use cities have evolved significantly, although cities themselves appear physically unchanged 💡 The convergence of factors that attract residents, visitors, and businesses to cities, reflect a shift in the way we live, work and play. Greater alignment is needed in the urban ecosystem to create better cities Chris joined his fellow panellists Dr Limin Hee (Director, CLC), Theresa Sheils, FAIA, LEED AP (Co-Regional Managing Principal, Gensler), entrepreneur Sebastian Ang, and Metro Yogi (Managing Partner, XDG Lab) in a lively discussion on the complex challenge of balancing liveability outcomes – needing to integrate technology and nature, while creating compelling city experiences. Some key takeaways from the panel discussion include: 💡 Focusing on experiential elements that attract people, such as cultural spaces and food culture, which are crucial in shaping liveability. 💡 Liveability measurements should be realigned to focus on what truly matters to the community, e.g. shifting towards outcome-based measures that quantify the impact of interventions. 💡 Can current planning and urban design approaches address the right issues We thank our speakers for presenting a diversity of views on what makes cities truly liveable and lovable and look forward to more knowledge-sharing at our next CLC Lecture! #clcsg #urban #cities #sustainablecities #liveablecities #resilientcities
