📆 Today marks the 57th #ASEANDay. The theme for this year ‘Connected & Resilient Community’ as it focuses on historical milestones, future aspirations and resilient economies. 👨🏻🌾🌾Agriculture plays a vital role in ASEAN, accounting for over 25% of GDP in some member states and sustaining livelihoods of millions. Unfortunately, the sector faces significant challenges from climate change and resource pressures. Extreme weather events between 2008 and 2018 caused production losses of around USD21 billion in the region. Additionally, Southeast Asia has a low amount of agricultural land per person, around 0.35ha per person, significantly lower than the global average of 0.6ha. 🗓 CropLife Asia #July Wrap-Up🌾 ➡ Jul 3-5: Duke Hipp, represented CropLife Asia at the 31st #ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Crops in Siem Reap, #Cambodia. There were plenty of insightful discussions regarding efforts to drive regional #agriculture and #sustainable crop production. ➡ Jul 8-10: Dr. Siang Hee Tan and Sonny T. was in #Taiwan for the International Forum of Precision Breeding from Industry Perspectives. Sianghee also facilitated a high-level engagement with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA) on Jul 10. ➡ Jul 12: ASEAN conducted the 12th ASEAN Sanitary & PhytoSanitary Contact Points (ASCP) meeting where it was attended by Duke Hipp and Thelma Soriano who shared the proposal for the ASEAN E-Phyto Certification Implementation. ➡Jul 15-19: Thelma Soriano joined the 2024 Mekong-U.S. partnership regional workshop on seed sector development for ensuring food security in Hanoi, Vietnam. The event was organized by The Asia and Pacific Seed Alliance in collaboration with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development- Department of Crop Production, and the American Seed Trade Association. Sianghee presented on #illegalseed and agricultural practices in Asia, discussing the challenges and solutions to this pertinent issue. ➡Jul 16: Duke Hipp joined #MAIZALL (International Maize Alliance) grower leaders from Argentina, Brazil and the US, and U.S. Grains Council in meetings with Singapore Food Agency and the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee (GMAC). ➡Jul 24: Duke Hipp represented CropLife Asia at the Conference on Pesticide Production in Ho Chi Minh City organized by the Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Plant Protection Department.   ➡ Jul 26: Ricky Ho, participated at the CropLife India Workshop on Crop Grouping Principles for Establishment of National MRLs in India. The workshop highlighted the urgent need for adopting globally accepted Crop Grouping Principles to provide #farmers with better pest management options. ➡ Jul 30-31: Thelma Soriano attended the Import-Export Phytosanitary Certification Process Workshop for the STDF participating countries in Bangkok, #Thailand. This was organized by APAARI - Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions and its implementing partners such as APSA, International Seed Federation & CropLife Asia. ➡Jul 31: Duke Hipp and Hairiani R. facilitated the CropLife India: 2024 Advocacy Strategy Session on Jul 31 together with India colleagues and committee members. The session yielded great discussions on best practices in advocacy and communications to support the industry. ➡ Jul 31-Aug 2: Sianghee participated at the Indo-Pacific Workshop on Enforcement Against Trade in Counterfeit Goods organized by USPTO Global IP Academy and the ASEAN IP Academy where he spoke on Counterfeit Agrichemicals and Environmental Crime and Online Markets, Counterfeit Medicines and Regulated Goods.
