Helping fleet operators gain visibility, cybersecurity and cyber compliance of systems onboard vessels

About us

CyberOwl helps asset operators in the maritime and critical national infrastructure sectors gain visibility, cyber security and cyber compliance of systems on their distributed, remote assets. We provide technologies, a managed service and specific cyber security advisory services to support the asset operator. Our technologies provide near-real-time visibility of the behaviours of assets and their communication patterns. They are deployed to identify and inventory assets on the IT and OT networks of these operational platforms. They detect and raise early warning of cyber attack tactics, techniques and procedures; identify anomalous and suspicious activity; and monitor for non-compliance with cyber security policies. These are delivered through a modular, distributed architecture that is optimised for environments facing the challenges of intermittent connectivity, bandwidth constraints and the need for remote management. Our managed service provides assurance and support to asset operators with any level of cyber expertise. We support security operations through alert verification, triaging and providing guidance on appropriate cyber incident response actions. CyberOwl was shortlisted for the Lloyds Science of Risk Prize, selected into the first GCHQ Cyber Accelerator Programme and is part of the UK Government's centre of excellence for cyber security innovation - the London Office for Rapid Cybersecurity Advancement (LORCA).

The cat is out of the bag. CyberOwl is now a DNV Group company. But why now? Timing is everything... And what next? There's so much more that we can achieve together... Building a vertical cybersecurity business has been interesting. I thought I'd take a moment to thank all the people who have helped us along the way and reflect on: ⚓ 3 critical decisions and why we made them ⚓ lessons I've learnt in making those decisions ⚓ our goals behind this decision to join DNV I hope this is helpful for others looking to build vertical software startups, within the maritime sector or beyond. Lots to achieve. Back to work. #maritime #shipping #cybersecurity

We are pleased to announce that CyberOwl and DNV, the independent assurance and risk management provider, joined forces. By joining forces, we form one of the world’s largest specialists in #maritime systems cyber security. The partnership comes at a time when the maritime sector must comply with a wealth of new #cybersecurity regulation and invest in incident detection, response and recovery as increasing implementation of digitally connected systems onboard vessels create new vulnerabilities. A typical fleet of 30 cargo vessels now experiences an average of 80 cyber incidents a year (https://bit.ly/3BcjRY0). TGIF! It's been a busy week at CyberOwl. Like nearly every other week. But remarkably, this doesn't seem to tire our people out. Mateusz Knapik spent his spare time looking at how you can use quantum physics concepts to design highly parallel processing to accelerate computations. By using system on chip with field-programmable gate arrays to support central processing unit in modern tasks. Well done Mateusz! We can sleep when we're dead. Firstly, we benefited from some in the past. Creating the platform for others to benefit is part of our ethos. More importantly, if we are going to digitalise the #maritime sector, we need to do it securely. That increasingly means ensuring the supply chain does not create weak links. If we’re going to do our job properly at CyberOwl, we need to be on top of the digitalisation trends in the sector. What are the problem spaces innovators are trying to solve with software and connectivity? How are they going about it? What #cyberrisks do these create? Plus, it’s also quite fun. Oh btw, if you’re looking for a great maritime #cybersecurity company to work with… ahem!

“95% of the innovations we see is shit!…” A strong point of view from one of the panellists. I could feel every pair of ears in the room prick to attention. …but among them are 5% of “innovators solving real problems”. In areas “where shipping companies do not traditionally have strong skillsets or experience. Nor established processes for agile product iteration. In particular in digitalisation, software-driven process optimisation” and hardware that falls slightly outside the immediate in-house expertise of ship design. This was a frank discussion. Perhaps at times a little too frank. I could feel my “co-founder / CEO rash” starting to flare up. But if we are going to have any hope in innovation in shipping, the leadership needs to be bought in. So understanding their perspective is important. Thank you for the privilege of moderating a discussion with your thoughts and insights Johann Diercks from Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG, Nils Aden from Harren Group and Torsten Barenthin from Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & Co. KG during SMM Hamburg. My observations on the discussion: We are no longer discussing whether we need innovation. The fact it is critical is clear. The discussion is more focused on how to extract value from it.  🔓 Split innovation projects into those with short-term and longer term benefits. That gives the organisation some quicker wins. And reinforces buy-in. 🔓 Make it ok for your internal innovation sponsors to fail. It requires a cultural shift to get to an experimentation mindset.  🔓 Most shipping sectors (and companies) are invisible. If great innovators can’t find you, the magic never happens. Make it easier to find you. Then filter down to the 5% (see above). But how do you decide when to cut off an innovation project? Even with the best will in the world, at some point you need to overcome sunk cost fallacy.  💊 Make that decision-process robust. Create a platform for cross-challenge. 💊 A simple equation is potential reward vs risk of persisting. If the potential reward is large and the risk of persisting is relatively small, persist.  💊 The worst reason to cut ties is a “lack of acceptance by the corporate”. The other panel, moderated by Haymon Sinapius, took a deeper look at how to make the innovator <> maritime giant relationship really deliver value. With those at the coal face of doing this on a daily basis Florian Heinemann from Hapag-Lloyd AG, Dale Kirkwood from V.Group and Hendrik Kramer from FERNRIDE. For those not focused on maritime, these may seem obvious points. For those of us who are, it’s really refreshing that the conversation has shifted to this type of exchange. Well done to CyberOwl’s co-organisers for putting on a great show. And continuing to fuel horsepower behind maritime innovation. Flagship Founders, The Captain's Table, Lloyd's Register, TMV , Motion Ventures, lomarlabs, Innoport, Signal and HHLA Next. PS - Love this "behind the scenes" image. Well done to the photographer!

URGENT Crowdstrike update ⚠: Multiple global businesses have reported failures of their Windows PCs today and early reports suggest this may be caused by a failed software update from AntiVirus company CrowdStrike. AntiVirus software typically integrates deeply with the windows operating system and makes daily updates without user intervention so on very rare occasions when something does go wrong it can cause a widespread impact very quickly. In this case the reports indicate that Windows PCs are failing to boot and this will make recovery more difficult because it will likely require manual intervention to use a repair tool which might need to be loaded from USB or CD. Crowdstrike is not widely used in by shipping operators on their vessels but any companies that are affected will likely face significant challenges working with crew to recover PCs remotely. If crew can't complete the recovery replacement systems should be delivered to a port call. However any impact on OT systems is unlikely and so there should be a minimal impact on vessel safety until this is resolved. Companies that don't use CrowdStrike will still likely have some impacts from suppliers or customers that are affected - for instance we are aware of some ports that have are experiencing outages and advising there will be delays to operations. It will be several hours or days before the full extent of the impact on global supply chains is knonw. For any businesses that use CrowdStrike but are not yet affected we recommend pausing updates and ensuring that PCs are not rebooted - until guidance from Crowdstrike says it is safe to resume. For any businesses that are affected we recommend waiting for guidance for Microsoft or Crowdstrike and also checking if you have backups available should it be necessary to restore PCs. More widely we recommend reviewing incident response plans to ensure they include plans for recovery of onboard PCs in similar circumstances. But even while this incident will cause problems we still highly recommend that companies maintain up to date Antivirus software since the impact of malicious attacks would be much greater. If you work with us, our team should already have been in touch earlier today to support you. If you don't and would like some support, please get in touch with any of us. #shipsandshipping #cybersecurity #maritime

I help shipping companies manage crises through proactive training and real time support | Use PR to help maritime-related companies of all sizes connect with their target audiences

Last week in Singapore, I had the chance to support CyberOwl's maritime cyber security conference, Cybersecure at Sea 2024. The session saw around 60 shipping professionals come together to experience what a vessel cyber incident looks like from an operational and crisis communications perspective. The interactive session was informative and impactful as participants from across the C-suite, IT, QHSE, and other departments worked towards managing the incident, the media, and public perceptions. The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, as the workshop was a unique opportunity for the shipping community to come together and tackle a challenging scenario. A special thanks to the Singapore Shipping Association for promoting the conference and creating awareness about this critical topic. Also, thanks to all the participants who helped facilitate a meaningful conversation around the commercial, operational, and reputational implications of a vessel cyber incident. If you missed out and want to participate in the next session, then please join us in Hamburg where my colleague Dustin Eno and the CyberOwl team will be equipping participants with practical tools and skills that will guide your organisation through a cyber crisis, with your company’s reputation and resilience intact.
